God Of War's Former Kratos, Ryan Hurst, Shares An Impressive New Look At His Ghost Of Sparta

Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) has been dropped from Prime Video's upcoming God of War TV series, but a new behind-the-scenes photo of his take on Kratos has received a thumbs-up from fans.

Following the news that Sons of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst had been cast as Kratos in Prime Video's God of War TV series, fans reacted positively. However, the same could not be said for our first look at his transformation into the character.

That was likened to cosplay and even dismissed as "AI," and based on the image alone, Hurst did not have the same presence as the video game version of the character (in his defence, that was never going to be easy for any actor).

Following a reported bicep tear, Hurst was dropped from God of War, with Dune and Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista now in the mix to take over the role. Hurst has yet to comment on his injury or Amazon's decision not to allow him time to recover. It's hard not to wonder whether the actor's ousting from a role is, in part, down to the negative response and the streamer realising the show needed a bigger star.

The truth may come out eventually, but in the meantime, Hurst has taken to Instagram to share a new photo of himself as Kratos in God of War. He deleted the image shortly after sharing it, and it appears to be from a makeup test, as his skin isn't bright white here.

The character arguably looks better without that, though it's likely to remain part of the series given that the reason behind Kratos' pale skin is that he's covered in the ashes of his dead family. Hurst also looks a lot bulkier in this shot than he did in the official one (which some compared to a "dad bod").

Amazon might have just dropped the ball with that first-look image, though we'll never find out what Hurst could have done as the iconic Spartan. While Callum Vinson's Atreus is also being recast for Season 2, there's speculation that the new actor will also take his place in Season 1.

God of War, which has received a two-season order, follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

The cast is led by Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus, with Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok, and Teresa Palmer as Sif.

God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer.

Additional executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers on the series.

God of War is expected to premiere on Prime Video in 2027.

I know it's been said so much at this point, but I really hate this for Hurst. I think he would've done Kratos well.

@TheWinkler - He was excellent in SOA and looks every bit the part there!

@TheWinkler - I loved him showing up in The Odyssey. Had no clue he was in it.

Loves him on Sons and Bates Motel too.

@Ha1frican - yes he did

Hopefully they didn’t just drop him to get a bigger star which I don’t think is the case given I feel they wouldn’t have cast him in the first place then.

The bicep tear injury is likely legit and unfortunate since it can take awhile to heal (atleast a year to get to full strength) and the production for both back to back seasons was scheduled from February 2026 to April 2027 so they would have gone really over schedule since they had 4 more episodes of S1 and an entire season in S2 left to film hence I can understand the recasting even if it sucks.

@Ha1frican - There was nothing they could do. One person can't hold production for 6 or more months.

Good choice , hopefully they do give him a different role if he heals up sooner then expected.

@TheVisionary25 - yeah. He looks more like Tyr and fits his religion not about cutting his hair.

@Mrnorth1921 - yeah but he definitely transformed himself well to be Kratos…

Also his roles have been similar to Kratos in the Morse era too where he’s stoic ,reserved , protective , vulnerable yet still fierce & intense when need be

He got in great shape for the role. Hell of a transformation from his days on Sons of Anarchy.

I'm rooting for him to get another role in this; he's physically imposing enough for Tyr.

@Forthas - Me either, no offense to Bautista, he's come really far as an actor, but his noggin isn't the right shape.
Forthas
Forthas - 8/9/2026, 6:32 PM
@J0RELLC00LJ - I feel like sometimes the character should be bigger than the star. This is one of those cases. Also Bautista seems like he is shrinking.
Yetiman

@Forthas - exactly! It’s the same reason let’s say Brad Pitt was Thor. I couldn’t see Thor I would see Brad Pitt. Not too mention Dave is too skinny and too old now.. and is a ok actor.. yes and his head shape is too round for the role

No wonder they dropped him. They couldn't carry him.

He really looks great in that photo, however in the official one they looked like cheap cosplayers, that's why lots of people didn't like it.

I feel like they wanted to go a whole different direction (cast someone more famous) and used the injury as an excuse.

Why couldn't they just use a stunt double for the physical bits? And why have they recast Atreus?

Seems a bit fishy to me.

@NotMyDiagnosis - yes I agree. Seems all too fishy. Ryan Hurst was perfect in my opinion

Damn he looks good!!.

I didn’t necessarily mind the first look we got and was willing to reserve judgement since we have had many of those type of “reveals”that weren’t great but looked fine on screen though wasn’t meant to be I guess…

I continue to feel really bad for Ryan since he is a genuine fan of the games & this could have been a career defining role for him since he’s never really blown up even though he is a good actor imo (he did well recently as Mentor in The Odyssey even though it wasn’t a big role) but now due to the injury , it seems like Bautista might get it who is someone I like and could pull off The Ghost of Sparta but doesn’t really need it imo.

Honestly I would rather someone like Hurst who is a lesser known actor be given the chance to be Kratos since that seems more exciting imo but oh well!!.

@DocSpock - The first game is great. Doesn't really play like the og trilogy and has a great story. Pretty cinematic as well.

The 2nd game was great too although there were a few issues I had with it but it was still fun to play.
