GRAN TURISMO: Gear Up For An Epic Thrill Ride In First Trailer And Poster For Sony's Video Game Movie

It's fair to say we never expected to see a Gran Turismo movie, but one is on the way later this summer starring David Harbour (Thunderbolts), and you can check out the first trailer and poster right here!

Sony Pictures has finally dropped the first trailer and poster for Gran Turismo (via ActioNewz.com), the studio's upcoming big screen adaptation of the iconic PlayStation racing franchise.

Giving us a better idea of what to expect from the movie that stars Archie Madekwe, Orlando Bloom, and David Harbour, it looks like an exciting, inspiring ride and one we're sure will make fans of the long-running video game series happy. Need for Speed struggled to find an audience back in 2014, so here's hoping it manages to fare a little better than that, anyway.

There are plenty of different directions Sony could have taken Gran Turismo in, but a legit racing movie feels like a better fit than crazy, over-the-top Fast & Furious-style action.

"Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough," reads the synopsis, "the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver."

Neill Blomkamp (District 9) directs Gran Turismo from a screenplay by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin. Joining Madekwe, Harbour, and Bloom in the movie are Darren Barnet, Djimon Hounsou, and Geri Halliwell Horner.

The latter may be best known to many of you as Spice Girls' Ginger Spice, though she's actually married to Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner. She knows her way around a Formula 1 track, so we're definitely intrigued to see what the singer and actress ends up bringing to the table here.

Gran Turismo is one of many video game adaptations heading our way from Sony, with God of WarHorizonGhost of TsushimaDays Gone, and Twisted Metal among those on the way.

Gran Turismo is set to be released in theaters on August 11.

@bobevanz - clearly it needs to end with him looking straight into the camera and saying, "now that's what I call a gran torismo".

Ok, premise wise I think it's cool telling this story. And let's face it, this is the only way this story was gonna be told.

However, it's hard to get around the fact this inspiring tale is basically a giant commercial for playstation. And if it's anything like the latest gran torismo it'll keep pausing the movie so we can pay them an extra $5 for each celebrity actor.

"hi there, my name is Hollywood, and since I always get everything wrong, because the Mario movie made a shit-ton of money, I'm releasing tons and tons of crap based on videogames in theathers, and then fire thousands of people when they inevitably bomb at the BO"

We get this before we get a GTA movie?
Pffft

I'd rather see Tommy Vercetti or C.J. stealing cars and curb stomping hookers. Fun for the whole family!

@Feralwookiee - There’s no way modern Hollywood would adapt this well. Plus Rockstar’s comments about GTA6 sound like they wouldn’t support a quality GTA adaptation either.

@Feralwookiee - We aren’t too far away from AI tools that can create media for us. Once they can address the uncanny valley of their AI people it’s on. Fan created movies will be the future since Hollywood is currently circling the drain. The problem is distribution since the IP owners won’t be friendly to it.
