Joss Whedon Is Not A Gamer

Joss Whedon says he has been approached in the past to turn a video game into a feature film, the problem he says is that he doesn't play video games. There's also more talk on Firefly.

The full video from Joss Whedon's post Much Ado About Nothing screening with the Film Society of Lincoln Center has been posted on YouTube. We previously delivered a report on Joss' response on the Quicksilver controversy and his love of Batman but I have the rest of the pertinent questions and answers for my CBM geek brethren. Read the transcript below and click the source link at the bottom of the article to watch the video.

On KickStart-ing Firefly/Serenity.

Joss Whedon: I'm not going to do that. Maybe one day I will. Maybe one day a 'studio' will actually want me to. Right now, everyone is - I'm happy to say, working very hard in very good jobs. And there is a real fear of the monkey's paw. Where you bring it back to life and it isn't the same. I mean, eve if it's great and it isn't the same. So right now, I'm dying to get on a ship with those guys again but I'm also doing yet another goddamn huge ensemble movie [pause] Why I can't just make a movie about one guy, [pause] ever... So right now, I can't even access that part of my brain. But I'm also the guy that said 'Well, I'll never have anything to do with Buffy again so...' If all the planets align, that would be great but I'm not going to do what I did the first time and move heaven and Earth to make it happen because I just don't have that and I think you can't force it.

Has Joss ever been approached to adapt a video game into a feature film?

Joss Whedon: I've been approached a few times. And I've sort of gone down the path a little bit and its never amounted to anything. I still don't understand why they never made a Firefly game because it lends itself enormously. They were going to do a big massive, multiplayer thing with many M's in the acronym - I don't know what its called, I'm old, look at me for god's sake. I have reading glasses. At first, I was not interested in video games just because there really was no narrative, there was no character, there was no decision-making, there was bang-bang. And that's really changed, and its become more and more interesting and the form of storytelling that a lot of people are gravitating towards - My problem is, I don't play them. Because those video games, there's a career in those and I never got the hang of them as my nephews found out when they tried to play Gears of War with me. I suddenly wasn't the cool uncle anymore as I kept shooting them by mistake.

what??? i LOVE video games. my favorite is the one where you have to get the jupiter lander on the landing pad or else it doesn't go "boop."

i tried the thing where the guys on ostriches try to stab each other, but it got too confusing. that shit's complicated!

games are just getting better and better if your not a gamer your seriously missing out

my favourite film experiences dont compare to my favourite game experiences

Mass effect is IMO the greatest universe ever created, and there are people out there who havent experienced it?

Cool I hardly play video games, too. I enjoy a good video game from time to time, but I don't get obsessed with them like some people.

I love games. Wish I had more time to play them. Dark Souls is crazy hard and intense.

@gillri - Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic are the best.

@Netman0007 - you shouldn't generalize, specially if you're not much into it.

Every Time I have a conversation in Mass Effect I think "Joss Whedon had to be like consultant or something". Because everything is so Whedon-ish.

"At first, I was not interested in video games just because there really was no narrative, there was no character, there was no decision-making"

Just reading that makes me think Whedon is a Mass Effect gamer.

I prefer the classics, Tyson's punchout, first three Mario's and MKs, and all the arcade classics. But the new gen games are alright too :)

Anyone who says video games have no substance is a complete idiot

People, as usual, take things far too seriously. Just like any form of media there are genres of videogames. Games you play just for the fun of it, to be frightened, thrilled, emotionally touched (yeah, there are those) and so on.

To simply say "it sucks and is made for stupid people who don't know what a good story is" is as stupid as those people who said the typography would kill knowledge.

That wasn't totally directed to @Netman, even because he obviously wouldn't listen.

Gears of War, Halo & Mass Effect! All franchises PERFECT for movie adaptations. Especially Gears!

I like the Assasin's Creed games, but how that gets a movie adaptation before any if the above 3 is absolutely beyond me.

Some of you need to play the metal gear saga if you think games don't have stories as they are really 9-16 hour movies.

@Netman0007

but its not about story, its about the pure immersion you get from them..Its an incredible feeling to be fully immersed in a video gane

These kind of games completely destroy the argument that video games have no substance

@TMW1987 I actually think Mass Effect would make a better TV series. But the other ones I can't argue with.

I'm a big fan of video games, but they aren't for everyone. I grew up playing them with my family and friends. It was a great way to bond.

I remember playing Batman:ROTJ on Sega Genesis, which was ridiculously hard. That was the first superhero video game I played.
