THE LAST OF US HBO Series Officially Begins Production; Star Gabriel Luna Shares First BTS Photo

Production is now underway on HBO's adaptation of Naughty Dog's award-winning The Last of Us video game in Alberta, Canada, and star Gabriel Luna has shared our first behind-the-scenes image from the set.

The photo features Luna (Tommy), Pedro Pascal (Joel), and recent cast addition Nico Parker (Sarah). While it may not look like these guys are in-costume as their respective characters, this is almost certainly the opening scene of the game, which takes place before the world really goes to hell in a handbasket.

Spoilers for the game, and more than likely the show, follow.

Sarah only appears very briefly in the first game before being killed by one of the infected, but her memory drives Joel on his journey and informs his relationship with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as the story progresses. There's a good chance the character will be given a slightly expanded role in the series, however.

Merle Dandridge (The Night Shift, Sons of Anarchy, The Flight Attendant) is also on board as Marlene, the Firefly resistance movement leader she voiced in the games, while Terminator: Dark Fate actor Gabriel Luna will play Joel's brother Tommy.

The Last of Us is set 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed and centers on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and the game's creator Neil Druckmann are writing and executive producing the show. The first season will adapt the events of the original game, but is also expected to include elements of the sequel. Druckmann recently confirmed that the series will take some liberties with the story.

God forbid Hoolywood cast people who look like the damn characters. This tokenized garbage is dead on arrival.

I like the cast and think this will be a great story to adapt and works super well for an HBO show. If I’m being honest though, it’d be perfect as a limited series adapting the first game. Druckmann being on board only worries me more that there will be multiple seasons that eventually go into Abby’s story for the second game. I know everyone has their own opinions on that game, but I have less than zero interest in seeing that directly adapted for TV.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - I'd like to see any future seasons the go into the second game's timeline explore the factions such as The Rattlers and the Seraphites

@RageDriver2401 - Yeah...I don’t get why it’s so controversial. Plenty of people loved the sequel, it’s the most critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusive ever I think. I just didn’t enjoy the story and thought the gameplay was pretty repetitive after a 10 year gap to develop it. Also just don’t think that story would be as easy to adapt to TV as the first game. I know they will, but I still think they will change some elements.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - no about Druckmann being on board worrying you, dude literally wrote the first game and co-directed it.

I'm sure it'll be a while before you see elements of the second game, mainly Abby, but it's not the end of the world. It's just a story, and a pretty decent one at that.

@RageDriver2401 - Yeah it's a bit hypocritical of me. But especially with whispers of a third game, I'm just curious what he has in mind for this series. It just felt like different creative sources between 1 and 2. He kinda Rian Johnson'd me with the beginning of the second game.
