THE LAST OF US Showrunner & Stars On Likelihood Of Season 2 Following The Game When It Comes To [SPOILER]

Will season 2 of HBO's The Last of Us follow the second game when it comes to one particularly shocking plot development? Showrunner Craig Mazin and stars Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal weigh in...

HBO's The Last of Us was a massive hit, so it didn't take long for the survival horror video game adaptation to be renewed for a second season.

A few minor (well, depending on your perspective) changes aside, the first season stayed pretty faithful to Naughty Dog's original game, but will season 2 follow suit - particularly as it pertains to a certain shocking development?

Major spoilers follow.

In The Last of Us Part II, Joel is killed-off pretty quickly when he's tracked down by the daughter of the doctor he murdered in order to save Ellie. The WLF member, Abbie, enacts a brutal revenge, beating Joel to death with a golf club while Ellie watches on helplessly.

If season 2 of the HBO series sticks rigidly to the game's story, Joel would need to be taken out within the first couple of episodes. Would HBO really get rid of its male lead so quickly?

"It wouldn't make sense to follow the first game so faithfully only to stray severely from the path," Joel actor Pedro Pascal said in an interview with Esquire. "So, yeah, that's my honest answer."

Bella Ramsey (Ellie) adds that viewers are "not emotionally ready" to see Joel die, but showrunner Craig Mazin seems to suggest that he could make a few alterations.

"This should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but I don't fear killing characters," he explained. "But the important thing to note is that neither [co-creator Neil Druckmann] nor I feel constrained by the source material."

Whatever way they decide to approach it, it's safe to say there is going to be backlash!

Do you think Joel should survive - at least for a little longer than he does in the game? Drop us a comment down below.

They will probably keep using him in flashbacks to keep the star power. Plus, they do that in the game, anyway.

I thought it would be a good idea to cast a very charismatic known actor as Abby. A lot of people hate her, so casting a known who people like would kill two birds with one stone. My idea was Daisy Ridley. She's charismatic as hell.

@BackwardGalaxy - lmao what? Daisy Ridley? She looks NOTHING like Abby, even if she's charismatic. It has to be a buffed woman.

Last scene of the final episode, bet on it.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I think it could work with it opening the last episode as well.

Basically penultimate episode ends with Abby going in for the first hit, and then the final episode starts Ellie entering the Chalet.

So Pedro will be in four episodes 1-2 then 6 as the flashback then the last as a force ghost.

My opinion, fwiw, is that Bella can't carry the show. If they kill off Joel - at all, honestly - then it will gradually decline and die. Audience experience watching a show is so different than playing a game.

Also, separate but related, they should learn from The Walking Dead's mistakes.

Kill him off at the beginning of season 3. Have 2 end with a huge cliffhanger.

The audience watches this dreck for Pedro and Pedro alone. If you haven’t played the game Joel dying early on in act of stupidity is not even close to being earned.

Don't kill him at all. Let the gamers whine about it until the cows come home.(Or until they return to their jobs at the view)

Joel was the best part about the game. After they killed him off i wasn’t interested in the game anymore. As above so below.

Its good that they won't follow the second game completely.
It was wrong to kill Joel of in the game too.

Bella Ramsey is a very good actress and she have a bright future.

But she won't be able to keep show up by her self. Joel need to be in the series.
Loved the first series and have high hopes for the second

I think just doing all the events (from Abby's Tracking Lessons to Ellie leaving Jackson) in chronological order would make for a solid second season. The third season can focus solely on Seattle and Santa Barbara then
