THE LAST OF US Star Bella Ramsey On Recent LGBTQ+ Backlash: "It Isn't Gonna Make Me Afraid"

HBO's adaptation of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us has come under fire for its LGBTQ+ characters and themes, but star Bella Ramsey (Ellie) has a message for anyone who takes issue with the series...

HBO's The Last of Us is the latest show to come under fire for its inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters, with the critically-acclaimed third episode, "Long, Long Time," repeatedly review-bombed on IMDB for its depiction of a gay love story between supporting players Bill and Frank.

It's a common occurrence these days, with a lot of people seemingly taking issue with changes being made to the source material solely for the sake of diversity.

Even if you happen to agree, those complaints really shouldn't apply to The Last of Us, since both games feature quite a few queer and trans protagonists (and yes, Bill and Frank were supposed to be lovers in the first game).

During a new interview with GQ, star Bella Ramsey - who self-defines as non-binary - was asked about the backlash the show has received, and gave a very matter-of-fact response.

“I’m not particularly anxious about it,” said the former Game of Thrones alum. “I know people will think what they want to think. But they’re gonna have to get used to it. If you don’t want to watch the show because it has gay storylines, because it has a trans character, that’s on you, and you’re missing out. It isn’t gonna make me afraid. I think that comes from a place of defiance.”

As Ramsey alludes to, if these guys have a problem with season 1, they're really going to blow a gasket once season 2 comes out!

In The Last of Us Part II video game, Ellie embarks on a relationship with another young woman, Dina, and a trans character is introduced when Abby - the story's controversial new deuteragonist - encounters a wayward Seraphite (an enemy of the WLF) named Lev who is being hunted by his people after being ostracized for shaving his head.

What do you guys make of Ramsey's comments? Be sure to share your thoughts down below, and keep an eye on GameFragger.com for all your video game updates.

Episode 6 of The Last of Us is set to premiere this Sunday, so be sure to keep an eye out for our recap as soon as the episode airs.

Personally I think its great the show had the chance to flesh out what the game always intended to, but kept on the editing room floor. The show is going to spend a lot more time with the characters than the game did, so there's always going to be a loose adaption. Adding in storylines the game makers wanted to do is a great way to get their vision added. Also it proved great character development for Joel.

Just waiting for the comments to roll in....

But in all seriousness, really proud of Bella for speaking out like this. After watching a few episodes of Last of Us, I could absolutely see them as Kitty Pryde in the MCU.

Think about it, a Last of Us esque Disney+ show with Wolverine and Kitty Pryde's adventures in Japan.

I feel like I'm the only one that either just watches a Show/movie or doesn't and just leaves it at that.

@billnye69 - I mean, you have an account on this site. So I take it you engage in media discourse in some form or fashion.

TLoU is one of the best examples of representation done right. Its never in your face, never trying to teach you, never showing queer people as something better. It just shows human beings who are not straight.
I know this means nothing to these imbeciles on 4chan, they will still hate this IP to the ground. Its tiring.

@Spawnnn - Amen man. TLoU should serve as an example to other franchises wanting to provide representation and how to do it properly. *cough* MCU *cough*

@Spawnnn - You're right. It never feels forced. The game didn't either. Unfortunately there are far too many examples of it being done poorly. No one wants agendas pushed on them. Even if you're okay with a certain agenda, you would feel the same way about other agendas. So I feel like this is a thing that most of us should be able to agree on. It isn't necessarily the content. It's HOW the content is done.

But if course you're also right that there are always idiots that will hate anything that isn't straight.

@FilmGuy7878 - "How to do it properly"? Lol. What?... there is no "proper" way. And the MCU has written gay characters just the same way. Nothing forced just gay people existing like in Eternals.

The MCU contrarian nonsense is getting dumber and dumber by the day.

@Tonic24k - Even the gay people in Eternals felt forced. Just say they are a gay couple just living their life. There was literally no need for the movie to go out of it's way to show a gay kiss, yes I agree it was progressive but they didn't need to make such a massive deal about it.

Interesting. Episode 3 was the best episode of an already great series up to that point. However, I do understand not wanting to see stuff like that on the screen. Even with me liking the episode, I still would've preferred they show something else, so I get both sides.

In my defense, I don't like watching any sex scene in a movie or tv show.

Anyway, I just watch this for Ellie & Joel. Joel mostly. Pedro Pascal being a daddy is just a state of mind you know.
FilmGuy7878
FilmGuy7878 - 2/16/2023, 9:46 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Hear me out but Pedro could make a great Wolverine. He's 5'11, he's really got a rugged look to him, he could for sure style his hair into the classic Flock of Seagulls haircut from the Claremont/Byrne comics, and he honestly deserves another chance at a CBM role. Get him as Logan and Bella as Kitty and we would have perfection.

@FilmGuy7878 - I don't really mind what role they cast him in, I just wanna see Pascal in the MCU. Wolverine could work

@bkmeijer1 - Same here man. The man could really spice up the MCU landscape.
