"Endure and survive."

At today's PlayStation Experience 2016, Naughty Dog shocked the world with the announcement of the long-awaited sequel to their hit 2013 game, The Last of Us. The first trailer takes fans back to the post-apocalyptic world they became all too familiar with in the first game, but it's very clear from the get-go that things have changed dramatically.

Titled The Last of Us Part II, the sequel features a few familiar faces, and what looks to be a significant time jump that will for the time being, leave fans with a lot more questions than answers. Watch the trailer below and let us know what you think in the usual spot.

Neil Druckmann, creator of The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II released a statement moments after the game's announcement, expressing to fans his excitement for the sequel and what's to come.

"Let’s cut to the chase: the sequel to The Last of Us is happening, and it’s called The Last of Us Part II.

I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to finally be able to say that Ellie and Joel are back for another intense, harrowing, and emotional adventure. Like many of you, we have a deep love for the world of The Last of Us and its characters, and while a sequel may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, that wasn’t the case. We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey. It’s still early days for the project—the game’s release is a ways off—but we couldn’t wait any longer to give you a glimpse of what’s to come. We’re going to let the trailer (coming soon to this post) speak for itself, but expect more information about The Last of Us Part II in the coming months."

It's still in the very early stages of development, so there's no official release date attached, but just like all Naughty Dog games, it's expected to be a PS4-exclusive.

@ReptarOnColdH2O - I think he meant that the story would revolve more around Ellie, because we still played as her in the original. Even if we play as her a majority of the time, I'm sure we'll still get to play as Joel.

You know you've got a heavy hitting video game franchise when people start cheering over Ellie playing a guitar. lol

Loved the first one and I loved the soundtrack as well.

@ScarletWarlock - Totally, the score is incredible, the fingerstlye is OFF THE CHARTS, his work on 'Babel', 'Motorcycle Diaries', and 'Amores Perros' is legendary, the man IS a LEGEND.

This for me is still his best work to date.

Masterful storytelling. Movie level. The emotional depth of these characters is astounding.

Hope they NEVER MAKE A FILM. Can't do the game justice. The game is a cinematic experience all on its own. Love this franchise.
