LEGEND OF ZELDA Animated Movie From Universal And Illumination In Development

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has proven to be a massive success at the box office, so it was probably only a matter of time before Universal and Illumination looked at another classic Nintendo title...

The Super Mario Bros. Movie recently became the second highest-grossing animated film of all time, so it probably won't come as much of a surprise to learn that Universal and Illumination are looking at another Nintendo classic to adapt for the big screen.

Though we don't have too many details on this one just yet, The Hot Mic's Jeff Sneider has heard that a "huge deal" has been closed to develop an animated movie based on the best-selling fantasy adventure games.

For the uninitiated, the series is set in the fictional land of Hyrule, and tells the story of an adventurer named Link (who looks a lot like an Elf but is actually a member of the Hylian race) as he attempts to rescue Princess Zelda from the clutches of the evil wizard, Ganon.

The games have spawned everything from comics, to toys, to a short-lived animated series, and Zelda remains one of the most popular, revered properties out there.

There have been several earlier attempts to adapt the game, and back in 2018, we heard that an animated series from Castlevania's Adi Shankar was in the works for Netflix, but we haven't had any solid update since (there's a chance it's fallen by the wayside).

It's probably going to be a long time before we hear anything else about this one, but be sure to let us know what you think of this news in the comments down below.

I never could get into those Zelda games. I remember everyone was playing Ocarina of time and I just couldn’t. Maybe I’ll get it on the switch now that I’m older

@MyCoolYoung - The new ones (Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom) are like night and day from the Ocarina period. They are open world and survival based as the environment can kill you (by being under dressed in snowy area, hit by lightning for wearing metal, etc). I personally miss the old Zelda games but the new ones are hugely popular.

@Kadara - do you dislike the new ones? Actually maybe I should play the old ones now that I’m older. I have a game boy emulator on my phone I can just download some

I still play Pokémon from time to time

@MyCoolYoung - I was literally talking with my younger brother about it today lol! I wouldn't say dislike per se, I am just not loving that weapons break now, the fact I have to keep throwing away items due to lack of inventory etc. I miss the linear story telling and dungeons that had a valuable, game changing items. I now clear a shrine after struggling to get a weapon that A) barely beats what I already carry, or B) I need to sacrifice something in order to carry it. Having said that, I think it's also like I told my brother me getting older and not having the time the game demands of me.

@MyCoolYoung - If you get a Nintendo Direct Online subscription you get their NES/Super Nintendo/Game Boy/N64 library of games, it's kinda cool. I had it for a year, it just expired and I let it because I don't have the time these days. I was playing a lot of Mario Kart 8 though, still super addictive!

@Kadara - man my little brother was bringing Mario kart over every week before he got into an accident and ruined his switch. It really is addictive as hell.

It definitely wouldn’t hurt to take a look at the direct online. Games do demand a lot. That’s something I’ve noticed since I started back taking some classes, but I do try to make time for some of things I genuinely enjoy.

@duoblade - 100%. If they're not willing to do an entire Mario movie with the original voice, they're definitely not doing a Zelda movie with a voiceless Link.

@duoblade - He's for sure going to say "Excuuuuuuuuuse me, Princess" once in the movie.

Illumination had 13 years to proves themselves worthy of an IP like this and they failed. Dreamworks in that timespan gave us How To Train Your Dragon.

Illumination was a fine choice for Mario, but this is an awful fit for Zelda. If they're thinking of working with Universal again then Dreamworks would be a better fit here. A leftfield choice that could work for me would be Laika, if it has to be an American adaptation.

@Arthorious - and if this movie ever does happen, Sony is going to make there PlayStation All Star Battle Royals movie with limited success just like the game. They already got the Uncharted movie

Yeah no. Illumination worked for Mario. But Zelda is basically lord of the rings but with a couple more jokes sprinkled in. It should, for the most part, be taken seriously.
