Earlier this month, Marvel announced 20 comics that will feature a Marvel VS Capcom themed variant cover for that issue. Needless to say, the chosen list raised more than a few eyebrows. The list is as follows:

  • ALL-NEW GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #7
  • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #31
  • AVENGERS #10
  • BLACK PANTHER #17
  • CHAMPIONS #11
  • DEFENDERS #4
  • DOCTOR STRANGE #24
  • GENERATIONS: BANNER HULK & THE TOTALLY AWESOME HULK #1
  • GENERATIONS: THE UNWORTHY THOR & THE MIGHTY THOR #1
  • HAWKEYE #9
  • I AM GROOT #4
  • INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #10
  • MIGHTY THOR #22
  • ROCKET #4
  • SECRET EMPIRE #8
  • SPIDER-MAN #19
  • SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL #20
  • THANOS #10
  • THE MIGHTY CAPTAIN MARVEL #8
  • VENOM #153

There are significant notes of interest here, in particular the choice of titles. One of the first things you may notice is a lack of X-Men titles on the list. In fact, the only mention of a Fox-owned Marvel property among the list is Deadpool (who appeared in the previous Marvel vs Capcom installment) in Spider-Man/Deadpool. This seems to confirm reports made around the time the game was first rumored to exist, that the game would focus heavily on the MCU and would actively avoid both the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, both franchises who have had characters in previous installments. Several of the heroes on this list have also been already confirmed to be in the game: Rocket, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and Thor are all already confirmed to be in the game, and have a presence on this list.

If this list is anything to go by, it seems some possible faces we may see in the upcoming fighting game could include Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Deadpool, Thanos, and Venom, as well as possible members of the Defenders or Champions, such as Iron Fist (who has appeared in a previous game), Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, or Ms. Marvel.

What are your thoughts on this potential roster for the latest Marvel vs Capcom installment? Would you have preferred more involvement of the X-Men and past characters, or do you think opening a few long-held spots will allow for a more fresh roster this time around? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
