IGN have released news that DremWorks creator Steven Spielberg passed on the film adaptation of ubisofts award winning game franchise Assassins Creed. Heres the report:

Why did so many studios -- including Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks -- pass on the Assassin's Creed movie, which Sony ended up making a deal with Ubisoft to develop and distribute?

Citing various unnamed insiders at some of the studios that passed on the project, Vulture reports it was largely a matter of creative control. The deal allows Ubisoft approval over everything from budget and script to casting and the release date. "They want to be able to pull the plug on the whole movie's development if they decide to. It's ridiculous," said one boss at a studio that dropped out of the bidding.

Another studio exec involved said that while they understand Ubisoft's need to guard their baby, "they're not moviemakers, and the only way to make sure it's a bad movie is to undervalue what movie studios do — and this is a deal that totally undervalues what movie studios do."

A Hollywood agent who represents a different game company put it more bluntly: "The whole Ubisoft/Sony deal is a waste of ink, paper and time. The level of control Sony gave up means, effectively, that Assassin's Creed will never — and I mean never — get made."

So why did Sony say yes? Vulture says it's because Ubisoft is footing most of the development costs so Sony is only looking at a small percentage of expenses on a movie with broad-based appeal and a built-in fanbase. Time will tell who made the right bet.

Looks like another movie Uwe Boll will be asked to make for Ubisoft. I personally think that if this movie cannot get off the ground, they should just leave it alone.

It sounds to me that Ubisoft knows the track record that movie studios have with movies based on video games and just wants to make sure it's not going to be a shit movie.

Movie studios are always changing everything when it comes to adaptions, especially video game movies...I could see why Ubisoft is trying to keep control. Trying to pull a Marvel...in a good way

After what Disney did with Price of Persia(it wasn't bad but could have been better), I am glad Ubisoft has all the creative control. Ubisoft made the game, they value the characters, they understand the story and I think this may turn out very well.

Anyway, Aaron Paul for Desmond Miles

and Henry Cavill for Altair

Lol, of course he did. I love Creed, but it's just too small for Spielberg. Or he must feel that way.

Im on Ubisoft´s side. Its better to have a good faithful movie than a movie at all.

I think Alfonso Cuaron would be good choice as the director.

I dont blame ubisoft, they dont want a great story to be turned into shit on the big screen. I havn't been a fan of Assassins Creed since they decided to stick with Ezio. After the 1st and 2nd game, I thought they where going to keep jumping forward in time a few more games with different assassins. Around the 5th or 6th game, the assassin would actually be desmond taking down the evil organization. Taking place in the modern world with all these assassin skills, that would be awesome.

Way to go Ubisoft. I love that they are doing that. Id rather no movie than a terrible one. This way we wont get another resident evil style debacle.
