Amandla Stenberg stars as Ruby, possibly the world's most powerful mutant superpowered teenager in a world where the government has decided to imprison teens who recently acquire mysterious abilities.

In addition to Stenberg, the film also stars This is Us actress Mandy Moore and Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie. Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who previously helmed Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3, makes her live-action directorial debut.

The Darkest Minds arrives in theaters August 3.  It will contend with Mission: Impossible - Fallout (July 27), Teen Titans Go! To The Movies (July 27), and Disney's Christopher Robin (August 3) at the box office.

The film is based on the Disney-published book series of the same name from author Alexandra Bracken.  Bracken also wrote the novelization of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

When teens mysteriously develop powerful new abilities, they are declared a threat by the government and detained. Sixteen-year-old Ruby, one of the most powerful young people anyone has encountered, escapes her camp and joins a group of runaway teens seeking safe haven. Soon this newfound family realizes that, in a world in which the adults in power have betrayed them, running is not enough and they must wage a resistance, using their collective power to take back control of their future.

I have kind of been anticipating something like this. Since DC and Marvel have a lock on the traditional superhero IP's I keep wondering why the other studios don't invent their own superheroes and stitch together their own shared universe(s).

@Forthas - waiting on Image and Dark Horse to really start puahing their properties. They've got great material

@BlackBeltJones - Not familiar with all of their characters, but my limited understanding is that in neither of those comic franchises are their characters connected in a shared universe.

@BlackBeltJones - On a side note...I think that both DC and Marvel should invent new characters in films, and make them expendable. So it would accomplish the role of allowing the films to have weight and consequences in their films (Agent Coulson) but not needing to kill of more popular heroes.

@Forthas - no connection but still a rich library of characters and stories to adapt I think.

I beleive that we will eventually move on from shared universes one day anwyay.

Amandla Stenberg was all but cast as Shuri but she decided to drop out and give it to Letitia Wright.

What’s with all of these young adult novels about teenagers having to fight back against fascist older generations? I don’t recall entertainment being nearly that pandering when I was a teen.
