X-MEN: We May Be Waiting A Long Time To See The MCU Reboot - Here's The Supposed Reason Why

There was no mention of the X-Men during this year's San Diego Comic-Con, but a new rumour suggests we'll be waiting a lot longer than many fans probably hoped before seeing the mutant team in the MCU...

Marvel Studios didn't disappoint at this year's Comic-Con, revealing some huge titles from its Phase 5 and 6 slates. Now, Fantastic Four, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars all have release dates, but what about the X-Men reboot? We know it's coming, and the hope is that it will be revealed at D23, likely breaking the internet in the process.

However, a new rumour shared by The Direct may shed some light on why there appears to be a delay on bringing these uncanny heroes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It's claimed that despite Ms. Marvel being revealed as a mutant, we won't actually get to bigger name mutants for some time. While certain characters could appear, the belief is that there are contractual issues within the original 20th Century Fox deals that mean Marvel Studios would have to use the same actors from those previous movies before they expire three years from now.

We're not entirely sure how that works, and can't imagine everyone from those X-Men movies was under contract until 2025!

Of course, Marvel Studios appear to have gotten around the problem by using Sir Patrick Stewart's Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Ryan Reynolds' Merc with the Mouth in Deadpool 3. So, does this mean no X-Men in the next two Phases?

Apparently, any new actors playing these characters won't be showing up until Phase 7 after The Multiverse Saga concludes, but we're taking that with a pinch of salt for now. Then again, it would make sense for the events of Secret Wars to reshape the MCU and bring mutants to the fore.

Again, we're pretty confident that an X-Men movie will be announced at D23, and with so many 2025 and 2026 slots still empty, there's no reason why this team can't show up in time for the war against Kang the Conqueror. This latest update is definitely interesting, though, and could explain the apparent delay (which we'd put down to Marvel Studios wanting to leave some breathing room between the disastrous Dark Phoenix and their eventual reboot).

What are your hopes for the Uncanny X-Men in the MCU?

@TheyDont - Reminds me of a set of twins I dated once. Could never get commitment from either one. Ba-da-ching!

Not surprising at all. I think we'll continue to see mutants pop up, particularly in She-Hulk, but we won't see a proper Mutant or X-Men movie until Phase 6.

@thewanderer - I think that a line in the recent trailer is kind of alluding to that when Jennifer's boss says something to the effect of "We've ben having enhanced people showing up all over the place now" and then we see the guy jump out of the window, land on a car, and walk away and then the judge who looks like a troll or something. How are those NOT mutants? They're not gods, super soldier serum recipients, gamma irradiated, or have a fancy suit giving them powers. So...?

@StSteven - Exactly. I think there's a very high likelihood that we see a mutant in She-Hulk.

That seems like bullshit. Disney literally owns 20th/21st Century Fox and any contracts it owned. If they wanted to cancel, buy them out, or hell even straight up ignore them, they easily could.

@Nerdman3000 - Exactly. Who's gonna sue them if they own the company that made the contract?

@Nerdman3000 - they still might be contractually obligated to the actors that play these characters. Doesn’t matter if Disney bought the company that owned the contracts, there’s still a deal between them(the actors) and the entity(now Disney) that holds the contract. If the deal expires in 2025, then Disney will probably just wait it out so that they don’t have to pay a dime to anybody.

@Nerdman3000 -
A contract is a legally binding document.

"and any contracts it owned."

That means contracts that Fox signed with all the actors. Sure sure sure The Mouse could buy them out but what's the rush. They have plenty of characters to play with until then.

Rumors are not news. My friend sent me three different “news reports” labeled “RUMOR”. If it’s not a direct quote from someone official at marvel studios or Feige then I don’t believe it.
D23 is where they’ll announce X-men stuff.

@slickrickdesigns - then youre an idiot cuz the same guy leaked the entire plot to all of phase 4 and was spot on. Rumors turn out to be true too, especially MCU rumors of late.

@McMurdo - ok smart guy. You’re super smart for believing rumors and I’m an idiot for waiting for real confirmation. I bet you love Josh Wilding articles as well. Keep up the good job of being super smart.

@slickrickdesigns - I hate Wilding articles. That doesn't mean I refuse to consider the validity of rumors as they permeate the news cycle out of blind loyalty for a studio I like to fap to.
