Marvel Studios' long-awaited X-Men reboot is finally coming together, with three (possibly four) actors now confirmed to have joined the cast of director Jake Schreier's movie.

We are expecting a full cast announcement during D23 next weekend, but the trades have been fed a few morsels to get the hype train moving. Samara Weaving will play Emma Frost, and yesterday, we learned that Kit Connor has been cast as Cyclops. Adam Driver is believed to have signed on for an undisclosed role, but this has not been confirmed.

And, of course, Sadie Sink will return as Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Jean Grey.

According to Daniel Richtman, Marvel has chosen an actor to play Charles Xavier, but it is not Bill Skarsgård, Tom Pelphrey, or anyone else who has previously been rumored. Some internet grifters have latched onto this and are hinting that the studio plans to bring back James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as Xavier and Magneto.

Could it happen? Sure, but we really don't see Marvel deciding to muddy the waters and confuse cinemagoers like this.

Jeff Sneider has also shared some intriquing updates. It seems that both Drew Starkey and Cooper Hoffman were early contenders to play Scott Summers, but the runner-up behind Connor was actually Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Sex Education), who would surely have been viewed as an outside-the-box choice.

"There are rumors flying all over the place for X-Men as reps try to position their clients for roles, and I’m not so sure about those Cailee Spaeny and Tom Pelphrey rumors anymore, either. I’m getting the sense that both are old info that’s simply resurfacing. I don’t even know if Rogue is in the movie at this point. If she is, she may have a smaller role than some are expecting."

This would line up with what we've heard about the core team, which is said to consist of the original comic book crew (Cyclops, Beast, Jean Grey, Ice-Man and Angel). If accurate, we can see other characters, such as Rogue, Storm, and possibly Jubilee, being introduced later in the movie.

Sonny Lee Sung Jin (Beef) and Joanna Calo (The Bear) recently came aboard to write a new draft of Michael Lesslie's script.

Kevin Feige had the following to say about Marvel's plans for the X-Men shortly after SDCC.

"Acquiring the X-Men rights isn't just about... for example, Wolverine is an outstanding character, and we were able to team him up with Deadpool, which is great. But the X-Men are far more than just Wolverine, far more than the original team; fundamentally, it's a universe, a multi-stage saga. Much of that is what we're working towards."

"We’re constantly changing, constantly evolving, but having some guidance helps us act more purposefully, especially with X-Men—it’s already had 10 movies, some very, very good, some I think haven’t lived up to expectations—how do we plan the 'mutant saga' in a very grand way?"

"That being said, we have many more characters to explore in the future—the schedule is already booked until 2042, especially the X-Men," Feige added. "The X-Men have many unexplored characters from the Asia-Pacific region, particularly China, which we're very eager to explore. That's why I'm excited about the X-Men: we can show the world different types of heroes."

Mark Strong, please.

Stoic, calm, and with the necessary asshole vibe that Sir Stewart's portrayal lacked.

@TemporarilyHere - ohhhhhhhhh... i like this idea! He's alot older than Bill or Tom, but regardless this is a great idea.

@MotherGooseUPus -

If we're hoping for an Onslaught-type villainous turn down the line (I know I am) then Strong's older age would make it no issue for the franchise to move past him and turn Scott into the team's leader.

Plus, I do prefer how in the comics Hank took his place in the Illuminati during Hickman's arcs of FF and NA.

@TemporarilyHere - I like that.

However Im hoping that Patrick Wilson rumor was true and that he’s been cast in the role.

He can play the good guy with a hidden edge well

@TheVisionary25 -

No shade at Wilson as an actor, the dude has proven his range, but I personally find him a bit too likeable to portray Xavier's darker more manipulative side.

But that's just a personal preference. It's like trying to see Tom Hanks as a villain, for instance. Can he pull it off? You bet. But I like the guy too much to hate him, you know?

@TemporarilyHere - interesting because I feel like he could bring that morally ambiguous nuance to the character if need be given some of his past work.

To each their own.

@TemporarilyHere - idk if Disney/Marvel has the balls to do Onslaught, but that would be awesome! kinda hoping XMen 97 does that but im mid S2 so idk if they are or arent. anyways, that would be pretty awesome. Strong is a fantastic actor

@TemporarilyHere - He’s too old, IMO. I know he can play Xavier but with how young the cast is going to be maybe Xavier would be better in his early to mid 40’s…even late 30’s. So he’s old enough to feel like a teacher but not old enough to feel kind of disconnected from his students. Or out of touch.

@TemporarilyHere - Not a fan of this idea. Don't get me wrong, I like Mark Strong, great actor, but quite generic. He's in so much stuff. I'd rather have a more interesting, less exposed actor.

@LibraMattered -

Like I told MotherGoose up above, the reason I'm thinking of someone like Strong's age is because I can see the MCU starting with Xavier but soon transitioning into Scott as the leader. Wouldn't be the first time they'd opt to off the original in order to pass the mantle, and giving him a villainous turn would certainly be a refreshing (while still faithful to the comics) change of pace after Sir Patrick Stewart's more wholesome approach to the character.

@EscapeMySight -

I get what you're saying, and I certainly agree with giving new relatively non-mainstream actors a chance to shine, but Strong as a performer has been burnt twice already with Green Lantern and Kingsman, so I think he deserves a more successful break with a stronger franchise.
LibraMattered
LibraMattered - 8/7/2026, 10:56 PM
@TemporarilyHere - That would definitely be a fresh approach. I don’t think they have the balls to do that though. Kill off Prof. X or somehow making him incapable of being the mentor. I think Scott was a leader in the comics either with or without Xavier. They kind of just failed to make it work in the movies.

That is an interesting way to go though. Focusing more on the team and not so much Prof. X. He could also just be leaving to re-center himself and in his absence Scott is the main dude.

Asa would have been terrible. Thank goodness.

Isn’t he the one that was on Reddit using a ghost account to say he was cast as Spiderman years ago when Holland ended up getting the role?

I’m glad he wasn’t cast as Cyclops if true since I can’t see him in that role at all.

@newhire13 - Yea, I feel for the guy. Fantastic actor, but he has a VERY specific look which doesn't translate well into the bulk of the superhero stuff he clearly wants to be apart of. One day he'll get that huge career-defining role that he deserves.
