X-MEN Spin-Off Shakeup: DEADPOOL 2 Will Open Earlier, But THE NEW MUTANTS Has Been Pushed Back To 2019

Fox has decided to delay the release of Josh Boone's The New Mutants by almost a full year, but the studio has also issued the Deadpool sequel with an earlier release date. Find out more after the jump...

According to THR, 21st Century Fox is switching up the release dates for three of its upcoming X-Men spin-off flicks, and it's a good news/ bad news type deal.

Unfortunately for New Mutants fans, Josh Boone's very promising looking adaptation has been pushed from April 13 to Feb. 22, 2019 - more than 10 months later than it was previously scheduled to open. On a more positive note, Deadpool 2 has been moved up 2 weeks from June 1 to May 18, and will now hit theaters a week before Han Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Gambit has also been pushed back from Feb. 14, 2019 to June 7, 2019, but considering the movie just lost its third director, that's hardly surprising.

There's bound to be speculation that these changes - particularly the New Mutants delay - have something to do with the recent Disney buyout, but the trade's sources maintain that it's to "avoid an overlap with X-Men movies in certain overseas marketplace, where Mutants and Deadpool 2 would have been in theaters at the same time."

The Wrap's sources, meanwhile, reckon it's because the movie, which has been heavily marketed as a horror, simply isn't scary enough.

WTF???? you've got to be kiddin me!
DP 2 it closer to IW and Han Solo (I know i know, but it's still SW...) and they pushed New Mutants by 10 months??? O.O

BO bomb everywhere.
They did the same mistake in 2016, with Apocalypse, which was quite close to CW, f*ck em.

"Insiders say one reason for the change is for the studio to avoid having an overlap with X-Men movies in certain overseas marketplaces, where Mutants and Deadpool 2 would have been in theaters at the same time."
10 months for that??

[frick]ing Disney didn't want deadpool to murder Solo a star wars spinoff. Was looking forward to New Mutants too.

@Doomsday8888 - Moving Deadpool that close to IW is really freaking stupid. IW is going to be a massive force at the BO. I don't think they will have to worry about Solo, but there really was no reason to move it from early June to middle of May.

Moving New Mutants that far back screams trouble behind the scenes. The logic they give for the change is complete crap.

Not a surprise that Gambit got moved back.

@Doomsday8888 - Deadpool is in a better spot now without anything major coming out on its opening or the weekend before. Plus it gets some of that long weekend memorial day action.

@Doomsday8888 - People who probably aren't going to have a job in a year and may be saying [frick] you to the Murdochs?

This says New Mutants is being made scarier... which makes sense I suppose.

If they still do Gambit... which I wanted it to happen, but at this rate? If they still do it, they better get Stephen Soderbergh since he's the most talented journeyman director I can think of.

@Doomsday8888 - lol Deadpool will be fine, the first one was a huge hit even with the R rating and even though this one has a bigger budget it’ll more than likely make it all back the first weekend-week.

@CaptainAmerica - they said the same thing about the last X-Men movie just because DOFP made 800+ the year or two before .. Infinity War is 10 times bigger then Civil War in terms of Cast.. Story.. and Camera wise ( imax ) if CW can take a toll on the last X-Men movie then imagine what Solo and IW will do to Deadpool. Let’s not be prideful here. I’m gonna see both. But if I had to choose ... I’d choose infinity war and then Deadpool . And people underestimated Rogue One.. so did I and I learned my lesson so I’m not gonna count Solo out

@Ixconkid - Solo will be pushed back to December most likely. Apocalypse made less than DoFP not only because it was no where near as good but also because of the promotion DoFP got due to the old cast members and Wolverine being back.

@DJRock93 - I feel ya bro, was really looking forward to new mutants, and the april release date seemed like a good time to release it. Gambit is never gonna happen and I’m not sure that anyone cares either way.

@LEVITIKUZ - I don't think they will have to worry about Solo, but Infinity War will definitely have an effect. This seems really dumb to place it so close to IW

I'm just sitting here waiting for Rob Liefeld's response.
Putting Deadpool between Avengers and Solo seems kinda shady.

Everybody knows you can successfully counterprogram Star Wars now. The days of giving that franchise a wide berth are over.
