X-Men: Tom Pelphrey Breaks Silence On Being Professor X Runner-Up: "That's A Very Long, Serious Commitment"

Iron Fist and Task star Tom Pelphrey has broken his silence on being in the mix to play the MCU's Professor X in Jake Schreier's X-Men reboot, and seems relieved in at least one respect.

Heading into last week's D23 event in Anaheim, Christopher Abbott (Wolf Man), Tom Pelphrey (Iron Fist), and Bill Skarsgård (It: Welcome to Derry) were named as frontrunners for the role of Professor X in Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot.

Ultimately, the role went to Abbott, leaving him to follow in the footsteps of Sir Patrick Stewart. Pelphrey came close, and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter shortly before D23, he opened up about being a runner-up for Charles Xavier.

"When it comes to opportunities like [Professor X], I am always of two minds. I am always a little torn in half," he started. "That’s a very long, serious commitment, and that makes me genuinely nervous because a lot of things can change in that time. So half of me thinks an experience like that could be cool and exciting, while the other half of me is a little worried about what could happen."

Pelphrey, who has received widespread acclaim for his work in Task, went on to say it was "incredible" to be in the mix, expressing his gratitude to even be considered. He also has no hard feelings about being passed over for X-Men

"You feel like you’ve done something wrong if you didn’t get it, but it’s just not true. There are so many amazing opportunities, and to do one means you cannot do all the other ones," the actor mused. "Every choice, in a way, is a sacrifice of all the other opportunities you’re not going to be able to do."

"I tread lightly now. If something excites me — such as meeting a Louis Leterrier or a Jake Schreier [X-Men director], and I love them and enjoy talking with them — I’ll be like, Okay, let’s try this, but no guarantees ever. So that’s where I’m at now. It’s easy come, easy go."

On a more jovial note, Pelphrey admitted he isn't too disappointed about not being required to shave his head to play the wheelchair-bound leader of the X-Men (well, presumably; some fans believe we'll see a Krakoan Age-style Professor X).

"I’ve also got a fat head. I have a watermelon. I was like, 'If we’re even going to have this conversation, go into your AI image generator and look at me with a shaved head. That alone could be horrifying enough,'" the actor joked. "I’m not kidding. The only hat I can wear is a fitted size eight. It is empirically a big fat head, and I don’t know if we want to see it shaved."

There's always a chance that Pelphrey plays another character in X-Men or the wider MCU, especially as he clearly impressed Marvel Studios enough to be a finalist for the role of Charles Xavier. With Finn Jones returning as Danny Rand in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, perhaps he'll take another crack at his Iron Fist character, Ward Meachum.

For now, the cast of X-Men is quickly taking shape as Marvel Studios looks to put mutants front and centre in the MCU. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that more actors will be announced down the line, and we know the full team roster has yet to be revealed.

Directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), the untitled X-Men movie stars Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers, Sadie Sink (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott (Catch-22) as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, and Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Storm. Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will play Nathaniel Milbury.

X-Men will be released exclusively in theaters May 5, 2028.

He already played character in same universe, Ward Meachum.
Those people resposible for casting in Marvel are so really weak in their job?
There are so many actors, actress, and they take same people to other roles, not variants, but same timeline.
Glad he won't play Xavier and Mahershala Ali won't play Blade. Ali already played Cottonmouth.

This guy gets it. He’d have been a bad choice for Prof X. Though I remain skeptical of their casting of Charles as it is.

Wouldn’t be a bad Magneto, though.

@LibraMattered - I wanted to say the same thing. I can see him as Magnus.

@LibraMattered - I can’t really see that

However if we are getting a Xavier & Magneto in their 40’s , I think Matt Smith could be a good Magneto

@TheVisionary25 - That’s such good and surprisingly unobvious casting. Matt would kill it. Someone said Lee Pace and I just strangely thing, Lee Pace is too good looking. They kind of uglier him up for Guardians. Matt would be great.

@VicLai - He’s very versatile. Can easily play intense and likable. Charming and unhinged.

I could easily see him as Magneto or Henry Gyrich.

@TheNightmareVirus - I don't see him as Magneto, more like Sauron.
Pathogen

I'll never forget his portrayal of the former neo-nazi in Banshee. When he first popped up, he was all tense restraint mixed with humbled, penitent.
UnderBelly

@Pathogen - That's the role I always come back to when I see this guys. There was so much nurance to his portrayal there and really had me looking out for him in everything that came after. His turn im Ozark was also quite underrated.

I hope he's open to talking about this now because he's got that Magneto casting they're sitting on. He would would kill that part. Though I did really love Fassbender.

@UnderBelly - For Mags, as much as I love Ian McKellen, he was NOT Magneto to me. Fassbender was a decent younger one, yeah. I don't know about Pomfoy, I'd have to see him. He would do well with a barely restrained rage that finally gets let out on occasion, sure. In my mind, Magneto never let go of a german accent tho lol

Honestly out of the consistently rumored choices , Tom was my pick for Charles Xavier since he could portray the warmth of the character but also the hidden darker edge if need be imo…

However I’m still willing to give Christopher Abbott a shot even if his casting is the one I’m most unsure about , mainly due to my lack of familiarity with his work.

I do get his trepidation of signing up for a role that would be a long commitment because he’s right in that things can always change as we have seen so it’s a risk and one that someone else may be willing to take on if not yourself!!.

I would have liked to see him as Prof. X. I think he would bring something new and interesting to role. But yeah, telling them your head may look bad shaved is probably not going to help you get that role.

If they do anything of substance with Danny Rand, I would love to see him come back as Ward Meachum. He was great in the role in the first season as a more villainous take on Ward. He was also great in the second season, bringing the character more virtuous.

@RolandD - agreed

I liked the friendship he was having with Danny in S2 and him being setup go on a buddy adventure with him in S3 sounded fun but oh well.
