I'm a little surprised to hear that simply because Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace pulled in $1.1 billion between them, which seems to indicate that there's still some life in Bond. For myself, I loved Casino Royale and thought Quantum had some cool moments, though it wasn't nearly as good.

I saw my first Bond movie in 1965 and I've been a fan ever since. Yes, there have been highs and lows over the decades, but I feel like Bond is currently in great shape. Just an opinion.

They definitely have elements of formula, but let me tell you: when I sit in that theatre for each film, popcorn in hand, and the Bond theme starts with the circles moving across the screen before becoming a gun barrel -- I'm a little kid all over again. I love it!

Love Bond.....Daniel Craig is Bond...

Casino Royale was great. Quantum of Solace was decent, but not fantastic. They are fun movies to watch and this latest go-round with Craig is a breath of fresh air compared to the shite-fest that Brosnan was doing. That last one with Halle Berry was embarrassing.

Still waiting for Muse to perform a Bond theme song....

I didn't hate Quantum, it was okay, but it just doesn't compare to Casino Royale. Craig was awesome as ever, as was Judi Dench, but the villain, villain's scheme, and Bond Girl (Olga, not Gemma, I wish they used more of Strawberry Fields) were just down-grades from Casino.

ukboy28 - 4/18/2010, 4:40 PM
very true, a downgrade indeed and quantum never had that raw edge that casino had.

Here's what I believe happened with Quantum of Solace: as usual, the writers Purvis & Wade wrote a first draft. Paul Haggis, who really added so many of the powerful elements to Casino Royale, did a draft, adding a layer on top of the skeleton that Purvis and Wade had provided. THEN the Writer's Strike happened. Haggis was interviewed on the picket line and he said that the script needed several more drafts before it was ready.

Instead of waiting for the strike to end, they went into production with the script they had, which is probably why there is SO much action without a lot of the depth that was in Casino Royale. What was there, I believe, was largely a result of Haggis.

Like I said, that's my understanding of it.

Sorry, I hate to pull a Teabag here:) But James Bond SUCKS. every Christmas.."Quick Mark, the bond movie is on!"...Coooool, is that the one where he says cheesy lines, kills Russians/Germans/foreigners and shags a hot woman and saves the day? Yes, that same one. BOOOORING. At least Bourne mixed it up a bit. [frick] James Bland:)

I thought the whole brand would change after Casino Royale, but the next one sucked again. It's like they cant help themselves but go over the top again!

@EdGross
I remembered there was a time when the producers were rushing Quantum of Solace for 2007 -- Imagine 007 in 2007! An opportunity that comes once in every one hundred years and they missed! I think that's the main reason they did not wait for for the strike to end.

I do hope now they finally re-intro Moneypenny and Q.

@LEEE777
That posters looks more like a cross over between Bond and Planet of the Apes!

What's strange about the Bond productions is that every once in a while they reinvent themselves but it's not long before they slip back into formula.

First time was for 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Box office dud (great film, but it had George Lazenby instead of Sean Connery) and 1971's Diamonds Are Forever was a return to formula.

1979's Moonraker was a giant box office hit, but it was decided they'd go too far out with it and 1981's For Your Eyes Only was far more serious in approach. But then formula started creeping back in with 1983's Octopussy and 1985's A View to a Kill.

1987's The Living Daylights was more serious as was 1989's Licence to Kill, though the latter flopped.

Things got shook up again with 1994's GoldenEye, which introduced Pierce Brosnan in the role. Its followup, 1996's Tomorrow Never Dies, was very effective, but then things started getting sillier with 1999's The World is Not Enough and 2002's Die Another Day (which had an invisible car and a villain suddenly in electrified battle armor that looked like something out of Power Rangers).

Despite the success of Die Another Day, everyone decided to get more serious with Casino Royale and the casting of Daniel Craig, but then Quantum was all action. Hopefully they'll get it together for Bond 23.

As Sean Connery said in The Untouchables, "Here endeth the lesson."

What the new Bond films are missing are memorable villains. All of the villains in the new Bond movies have been crap IMO.

Many Bond movies sucked but the last 2 were really good, Casino Royale was an all around great movie and Quantum was one of the best action movies of the last while. Ror, you're losing me, first Ebert and now Bond (mind you Brosnan minus Golden Eye reeked), bro...

Why is everyone picking Mark Strong to be the villain in everything?

Casino was good no doubt, but Quantum went back to suckage. It depends on what you mean by "good action movie"..good action yes, good movie no.
