BOX OFFICE: $70M Opening Day Haul For THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

Jennifer Lawrence's (X-Men: Days of Future Past) second Hunger Games film has topped the first, earning $70.5 million dollars in its debut. Analysts project a mid-$140M box office take for the YA adaptation for the entire weekend.

The film has also earned $64 million dollars internationally, giving it a current worldwide gross of $134.5M. The film's world wide box office gross should well eclipse the $200M mark by weekend's end.

"THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever. THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE is directed by Francis Lawrence, from a screenplay by Simon Beaufoy and Michael DeBruyn, and produced by Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has over 50 million copies in print in the U.S. alone. THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE opens on November 22, 2013. Lionsgate presents a Color Force/Lionsgate production."

This movie was really awesome! I loved it! The Hunger Games was awesome and topped the first. The climax was...man that was awesome! Seeing this again.

I'm not even a fan of the books (never read them) but this movie makes me wanna see them.

The cliffhanger at the end was great. Can't wait for the next one.

The movie looks great. My wife and I are planning to see it as soon as we get a babysitter.

Opening nights can be deceptive because if you have a rabid fanbase like Twilight, Harry Potter and THG, then the box office will be inflated the first night.

I'm thinking now this movie will not top IM3 even domestically but will be the second highest grossing movie this year. Good stuff. Unlike the Twilight franchise this movie actually is good.

And the reason people compare it to Twilight is because the books are written by a female author, the lead is female and the audience is mostly female. The differce of course is that the HG books are infinitely better than the Twilight books. I can't wait to see this. I love Jenninfer Laurence.

So, basically it's not even going to open much better than the first HG. CF is predicted to have a weekend opening of around $150M, which is the same as HG.

@Poolio

It's far from being a "tween" film....extremely dark and adult, almost no comedy or lightness to speak of

When did comedy start to equate to not adult?

I would suggest some of you rent Dr. Strangelove, Fargo and Killer Joe to get a clue. Those movie are funny as all get out but are 10x more adult than all these so called dark and gritty movies you guys love to spout off about.

These are merely estimates. We'll know more on Monday. Seems to be the cliche that the third installment has to be divided into 2 parts.

Any idiot calling this a "tween" movie obviously hasn't realized that superhero movies are mostly kid stuff no matter how much they want to try to make them more serious. There's more silly humour and comic relief in Superhero films (especially Marvel) than you'll find in series like the Twilight let alone The Hunger Games!

The Hunger Games series of books are bought mostly by adults in my bookshop and is one of the biggest selling of the last decade. The first film was excellent and I have no doubt this one will be too.

Best film of the year remains GRAVITY so far for me though.

Never read the books. I did not think the first Hunger games movie was good. But I saw Catching Fire last night. Movie was very good. I was impressed. Had much more grown up themes and was more emotional, and the emotional scenes actually had weight, unlike Thor: TDW.
BlackIceJoe
BlackIceJoe - 11/23/2013, 11:25 AM
I am not sure why people think this series is for kids. The books were made for adults and young adults but for some odd reason kids are reading it now. I read the books before it became a hit and thought the books were good. Yeah if they went closer to the source of the books you could even make a R rated film. But I knew they would never do that.

As for the movie I don't get why anyone would want it to fail. The second book was the best book in the series. So I am looking forward to get a chance to see the film be it this weekend or next week.

Cause of 3 thing

1. Ppl on here are so damn Closed minded, don't like to explore other movies, which I think they are missing a lot of good movies out there.

2. These movies are actually for young adults and up, some things are watered down so it can get a pg13 rating. There are other American movies like this Death Race, Gamer, they all are very similar but all was not a hit in the box office

3. Most of the ppl on here talking mess are kids but yet get all excited when DC do another animation movie?
