Americans weren't interested in Thanksgiving leftovers this year as the post-Thanksgiving day into December frame only pulled in $77M-$79M. That is 16-19% off last year's figures. Those figures haven't been that low since 1998, when that same time period generated $66.4M. Much of the blame for that rests with the major studios who decided not to serve up any potential blockbusters.
It wasn't all bad news for the domestic box office as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 took the top spot for the third weekend in a row with $21.6M. If you compare that to previous films in the series, Catching Fire made $4M more in its third weekend and The Hunger Games made $11M more. Mockingjay is now on the verge of surpassing Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($259.76M) for second place at the domestic box office. Can it catch Guardians of the Galaxy's $332M by the time 2014 ends? We shall see.
