STX Films closed off CinemaCon Day 2 with a quick, but very interesting, presentation that saw them preview five of their upcoming releases, including Adrift, Peppermint, Second Act, Mile 22, and The Happytime Murders.

Adrift

STX Films opened their presentation with an extended preview of their upcoming June release, Adrift, which they touted as one of the largest films ever shot practically on open water.

Director Baltasar Kormakur and stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin were present to show off the new footage, which looked extremely intense as the two play a couple that miraculously survives a Category 5 hurricane, but then find themselves stuck in the open sea in their broken down sailboat.

The film opens the same weekend as both Woodley's The Fault In Our Stars and Claflin's Me Before You and hopes to duplicate the success of those two romantic dramas.

Peppermint

Next up was a first look at the action/thriller Peppermint, which stars Jennifer Garner in her most badass role to date. Here she stars as a mother that tragically loses her daughter after getting caught in the middle of a gang hit. After losing the fight in court, she goes off the grid, only to resurface five years later as a seasoned killing machine, hellbent on getting revenge for her fallen family.

Think American Assassin mixed with John Wick and a little bit of Taken.

Second Act

Jennifer Lopez wasn't able to attend, but she did send a pre-recorded message for the crowd, previewing her upcoming comedy Second Act.

The movie follows Lopez's character, who thanks to a fake Facebook page is able to secure a new high-paying career. Hijinks ensue as she attempts to live a double life and keep her new colleagues from learning about who she truly is.

Leah Remini, Annaleigh Ashford, Vanessa Hudgens, Freddie Stroma, Dan Bucatinsky, Milo Ventimiglia, and Treat Williams also star. The film is due out this Thanksgiving.

Mile 22

Mile 22 was undoubteldy the studio's big-ticket item, bringing out Mark Wahlberg, Lauren Cohan, Iko Uwais, Ronda Rousey. and director Peter Berg to hype up the upcoming action/thriller that sees Wahlberg lead an elite task force, named Overwatch, that operates outside of the law.

While most of their presentation was actually overshadowed by Wahlberg's fascination with Berg's hard nipples, the footage was everything you'd want from a Wahlberg/Berg collaboration. There's some truly hard-hitting action and it looks like Uwais may be on his way to a star-making performance. He really steals the show in one early action sequence.

The Happytime Murders

To close out a short, but informative, presentation, STX brought out a first look at their upcoming neo-noir puppet comedy thriller, The Happytime Murders, which looked absolutely hilarious with hard R-rated footage that absolutely killed.

The movie centers around puppet private eye Phil Phillips and Detective Edwards (Melissa McCarthy) as they try to find a viscious serial killer that has his eyes set on Phil's former flame Jenny (Elizabeth Banks). This movie should have a pretty solid run in late August, leading into the fall.

Berg/Wahlberg are great collaborators. Deepwater Horizon moved me more than any movie I’ve seen recently. Really great film.

Definitely agree. It's directed by Jim Henson's son as well (hence the puppets). Should be a good one. Not sure about Melissa McCarthy in the lead though.
