Are you not entertained? Well, you might be after these latest casting additions for Gladiator 2.

We recently learned that Ridley Scott's long-gestating sequel had taken a major step forward, with Normal People and Aftersun star Paul Mescal tapped for the lead role.

Now, the project has enlisted a couple of major new cast members.

THR reports that two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington is in negotiations to re-team with Scott on the movie (they previously worked together on 2007's American Gangster). Details on his role are being kept under wraps, but he is rumoured to be playing the man who trains Mescal's character for his gladiatorial battles.

In addition, The Batman, Eternals and The Banshees of Inisherin Best Supporting Actor nominee Barry Keoghan will play the villainous Emperor Geta.

Russell Crowe's titular warrior, Maximus Decimus Meridius, was killed off at the end of the first movie, so when it was first announced that Scott was planning a follow-up to his Academy Award-winning action drama, fans were curious who the story would focus on.

It's since been confirmed that the sequel will follow Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of the villainous Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), who looked up to Maximus and helped to honor him by carrying his body after his death.

David Scarpa, who worked with Scott on All The Money In the World and the upcoming Napoleon Bonaparte film, is currently working on the script. Scott will also produce with Michael Pruss via Scott Free, and Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment.

No release date has been set.

The Last Duel was fantastic and Napoleon sounds like it’s gonna be another home-run, with this cast at 85 years old, Ridley’s on fire

Could see Keoghan as Lucius. Washington is probably a new character. Wonder if we'll see Hounsou return though

I really hope they retcon that joker scene out of the Batman and do not use Barry as the Joker. His small scene and the deleted scene are terrible.

I don’t think Heath is the gold standard for the joker, that would be hamill. But the problem is that Heath did such a wonderful job on the big screen that every joker now is living in his shadow just like another user said about Reeves and Superman.

I personally am not as connected to reeves so I saw Superman in CAVILL (until Snyder butchered him completely).

But Heath is my generations joker.

Joaquin was somehow able to leave a mark and get out of under that show. Gen Z kids look to joaquin as the essential joker which is impressive. But actors such as Barry and Leto are still impersonating ledger to an extent.

All this to say, I think the answer, is to carve your own path WHILE being accurate to the comic.

I personally want a joker who just comes off the page. Lanky, huge smile and teeth, long nose, pale skin and for goodness sakes, has a good laugh (which Barry’s was as bad as Leto’s if not worse!)

@HulkisHoly - Holy goodness, Barry Keoghan's Joker was absolutely horrible in that scene. His look with all of the scarring (Heath Ledger knock-off), his laugh (You're right, it was worse than Leto's) made me cringe beyond reason.
Don't get me wrong, Keoghan is a fantastic actor, he's just not the Joker...!☮
