Digger Reactions: Tom Cruise's New Film Is Dividing Critics, And It's Unlike Anything He's Done Before

The first social media reactions to Digger have surfaced following the movie's premiere, and critics appear divided, with it being called everything from a "mess" to "bold" and "unpleasant."

Mission: Impossible star Tom Cruise tackles perhaps his most unique role yet in Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Digger. Playing the world's most powerful man, Cruise's Digger Rockwell will embark on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity's saviour before the disaster he's unleashed destroys everything.

Much has been said about what's really going on with Digger, with theories ranging from it being a secret musical to a movie within a movie. While it certainly sounds like there's more to it than meets the eye, critics are divided.

As we first noted on ActioNewz.com, it seems that both Digger and Cruise are just as likely to score an Oscar nomination as a Razzie next year. Some have hailed it as a "brave and gorgeous art film" and one of the most "visually inventive, conceptually audacious, and unpredictable studio movies ever made."

However, those points are countered by social media reviews that deem Digger "unfunny and flat," "a mess," "generally unpleasant," and a "very mixed bag." Most agree regular moviegoers likely won't enjoy it, suggesting Digger will be a huge test of Cruise's star power and whether he's enough to win audiences over.

The reviews should be fascinating, as is the movie's eventual Rotten Tomatoes score. Fortunately, there's not long to wait, as the full embargo for Digger lifts on September 29 at 12 pm ET. We'll have a full breakdown for you then.

Iñárritu directs Digger from a screenplay by Iñárritu and Oscar-winners Alexander Dinelaris & Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, and a story by Iñárritu & Berman. The film is produced by Iñárritu, Mary Parent, Cruise and Michael Sharp, and executive produced by Joshua Grode, Berman, Dinelaris, Giacobone, Jez Butterworth and Emmanuel Lubezki.

Cruise stars in the title role, alongside Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. Robert John Burke, Emma D'Arcy, Burn Gorman and Sophie Wilde also star.

Digger was shot entirely in VistaVision and will be released in theaters and on IMAX screens on October 2.

I wasn’t planning on watching this in theatres but I’ll definitely check it out on streaming. Cruise playing an eccentric character is the selling point here.
