GREEN LANTERN Director Martin Campbell Reflects On Not Casting Henry Cavill As CASINO ROYALE's James Bond

We've long heard that Henry Cavill was among those battling Daniel Craig for the role of 007, and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell has finally explained why the Man of Steel star wasn't chosen...

After taking the helm of Goldeneye, it made all the sense in the world for Martin Campbell to direct 2006's James Bond reboot Casino Royale. The movie was a hit, and spawned a series of movies that, while a little hit-and-miss at times, delivered some of 007's best adventures on screen.

With No Time to Die ending Daniel Craig's tenure as Bond, there's a lot of excitement to see who will pick up where he left off in the next iteration of the long-running action franchise.

Man of Steel star Henry Cavill remains a fan-favourite choice, though this wouldn't be the first time he was eyed to play the iconic Ian Fleming creation. Talking to The Express (via ActioNewz.com), Campbell revealed just how close the Superman actor came to playing 007 nearly two decades ago.

"He looked great in the audition. His acting was tremendous," the filmmaker recalls. "And look, if Daniel didn’t exist Henry would have made an excellent Bond. He looked terrific, he was in great physical shape...very handsome, very chiselled. He just looked a little young at that time back then."

"I wasn't favouring Henry. The way they work with Bond and it’s pretty terrific is when they decide on the actor and you audition – in our case, it was eight people – it’s very democratic. It was myself and the producers, casting director, etc. And you go through the eight people and you put your hand up as you talk through each person and ultimately everybody has to be unanimous in their decision."

Asked if he thinks the now 40-year-old actor could still play Bond, Campbell added, "I think they sign on for three Bonds, I’m not absolutely 100 per cent certain of that. So that’s going to take, what, six years of your life maybe? The next guy’s going to have to do that."

"Henry’s 40, so by the time he’s done the third one he’s going to be 50 and anything beyond that’s two, three years per Bond. He’s in good shape Henry, he’s a good guy. He did very well in the audition, but ironically he was too young."

Like Idris Elba, it feels like the ship has probably sailed on Cavill playing this character, a shame when we're sure he would have knocked it out of the park. Still, had he starred as 007, there's no way we'd have also seen him as the DCEU's Superman.

Based on how his tenure as that superhero ended, Cavill may well have preferred playing Bond, but the current expectation is that the actor who inherits the role from Craig will be in their 20s or 30s.

Stay tuned for casting updates as we have them.

Did not realize this was the guy who directed Green Lantern. Wild.

@SheepishOne - great directors can make bad movies, truth is that contract work often ends up badly for prolific directors.
That’s why Scorsese or Tarantino “limit” themselves to original movies.

But that being said even the greats make bad entries in their filmography

They made the right choice. Craig is far and away better, and more versatile.

He was too young for the role in 2006.
Still, crazy how in the span of the year he almost got to be James Bond AND Superman.

My top 3 picks: Cavill, Aaron Johnson or Aiden Turner

Acting issues aside... if Henry were to somehow nab Bond today he needs to slim down.

I know he loves staying at his current/Superman size but it doesn't look right in most other roles he does. He refused to slim down for Geralt when asked, wonder how he'd go about that in the same situation with Bond.

@Kurne - I think the size that he was for The Man from U.N.C.L.E would be fine for Bond imo.

Craig was fantastic and my second favorite Bond behind Connery. I think they went with the right choice even if Cavill has the look.

GOOD!

Cavill can't act and would have killed the franchise, AGAIN...like Timothy Dalton did...at least from what I read.

Another good lesson to wait until the finished product.

When “blonde” bond Daniel Craig rode in on that military craft for press conference. He stepped off they boat, stick thin, medium length hair, BlONDE HAIR, and under 6 feet.

The internet burned that day. The fear, anger, hate!

Interesting learning lesson for most.

I would still pick him and lock him in a 3 movie deal till 2030.
Bond being an older gentleman is ideal, no need to think in MCU long term ways.

Hated Craig as Bond, not that Craig is a bad actor or anything but he just didn’t display the traits I prefer in the character.
Especially since it were his movies that threw the concepts of multiple Bonds out. So him being so non characteristically Bond and more of a Jason Bourne type sucked in my book.
The movies were great (mostly) but it made me care less about the character of Bond.

The choice of having Bond be a brute with dry seriousness felt very 2000s edge to me and still does.

Yes, I prefer my Bond movies silly, entertaining, charming and exciting.

Goldeneye was the best of the Brosnan Bond movies and Casino Royale was the best of the Craig movies. It sucks that Craig was such a good Bond but only had 2 truly great movies - Casino Royale and Skyfall. He deserved better.

@mountainman - couldnt agree more with what you said. i think craig got 3 good bond movies, but only 2 were great

@mountainman - No time to die. had alot of potential but was a let down..at least wasnt as much of a letdown as Spectre

mountainman - 6/27/2023, 2:18 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - I’d place No Time to Die Below Spectre, only for its goofy humor and I hated the ending. But it did have arguably the best action of the Craig era. Mixed bag for me.

At least we can all agree that Quantum of Solace was the worst of the era.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 6/27/2023, 2:35 PM
@mountainman - interesting... yea i was not a fan of Spectre. But, yes, i think every Bond fan can agree that Quantum was easily the WORST lol

@MotherGooseUPus - Wife and I did a partial Bond marathon last year. Brosnan and Craig eras. So crazy how different they were.

Craigs has been the best era yet, but I find myself preferring Mission Impossible these days.

I hope they can get a good actor and do something cool with the next era. I’d almost like a more serious take on the Brosnan style. More technology and gadgets, a bit over the top, but not as far as those went. No surfing on icebergs or space lasers this time please.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 6/28/2023, 7:34 AM
@mountainman - haha, yes those eras are my 2 favs as well but holy crap what a difference in campy to serious... with that said... the MI series has absolutely blown away Bond and it's NOT close at all. MI is by FAR the best action series, maybe even series going in the last decade or longer. Starting with Ghost Protocol (watched on monday haha) each one is getting better and better and better
mountainman
mountainman - 6/28/2023, 7:49 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - Agreed. I do think Ghost Protocol gets a slight knock for the super generic villain and climax that isn’t as good as many in the franchise. But the Kremlin and Dubai sequences were great.

I’d say GP is slightly ahead of III, but Rogue Nation and Fallout are miles ahead. McQ seems to have really figured the franchise out.

Rob Stark should be the next Bond, but if they're going to increasingly make Bond movies Woke, like in the final awful film, like Broccoli insists they're going to do, they're going to find out real quick it's not what people want from a Bond film. It's okay to want a Bond film to be fun action, hot women, and a cocky a-hole who does things his way. "No Time To Die" is one of the worst Bond films I've ever seen. A dour, depressing, emasculating piece of Woke crap. No one wants that.

love cavill, would love him as bond. craig was amazing so i have 0 complaints. i think cavill can still do it, even if he is 40. as someone pointed out, look a cruise and all the crazy stunts and shit he does. plus, just watch the MAN from UNCLE and you know he'd kill it as bond
