JAMES BOND: DIE ANOTHER DAY Star Halle Berry Recalls The JINX Spinoff Film That Never Was

Halle Berry was one of the James Bond franchise's most memorable "Bond Girls" thanks to her role in Die Another Day, and she's now revealed the planned Jinx spinoff that never ended up happening!

Way back in 2002, Halle Berry played "Bond Girl" Jinx in James Bond film Die Another Day, the final appearance for Pierce Brosnan's version of 007. While the franchise was later rebooted with Casino Royale, the X-Men star has now revealed that producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson were once pushing for a spinoff focusing on her character.

Unfortunately, the actress reveals that MGM wasn't willing to pay the $80 million needed to get Jinx into production - a strange decision, but one Berry believes was a product of its time.

"It was very disappointing," the actress, one of the biggest stars of that time period thanks to the X-Men franchise, recalls. "It was ahead of its time. Nobody was ready to sink that kind of money into a Black female action star. They just weren’t sure of its value. That’s where we were then."

No Time to Die promises to highlight a number of female characters, with Lashana Lynch as a new agent with real box office potential if rumors about her identity are correct. Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but the world is definitely ready for a female-led James Bond spinoff now, even if it wasn't nearly two decades ago.

Id say it had less to do with her being black, more to do with the Bond series bombing and them rebooting.

Although yeah, no need for a female bond, want a female agent, there are plenty of characters that could work or they could make a new one

@dracula - I agree! In fact i think they should take existing female franchises and make them more in line with a serious James Bond mode...like Charlies Angels.

As much as she’s true about Hollywood refusing to invest in a black female action star at the time (which is wrong), I’ll tell you as a massive Bond and Halle Berry Jinx fan - “action star”...

Also I lied, I’m not a massive Halle Berry Jinx fan.

Halle Berry is not a terrible actress, but I do think acting wise she is overrated. I have never understood why Hollywood was so determined to build franchises around her when some of her contemporaries - like Salli Richardson - who were just as attractive and more talented but never got the same opportunities.

@Forthas - Halle Berry is anything but overrated. Almost no one regards her acting ability aside from Mobster's Ball. And even some people questioned that Oscar win at the time.

There was nothing there... she was just a hot actress at the time, but it’s not like the character had anything compelling about her, so no real loss.

The only reason Jinx was memorable was because it was Halle Berry, the movie itself is probably the worst James Bond movie I've seen.

''Nobody was ready to sink that kind of money into a Black female action star''

I'm kinda hoping Lashana Lynch will be the lead of a spin-off after No Time To Die this time around though.

DAD is still my favorite 'guilty pleasure' Bond movie. The Brosnan era was pretty crazy with gadgets & big expensive set pieces, that hovercraft chase tho...

And DAD introduced the world to Rosamund Pike, which was not a bad thing at all....

@GothamSon - I hated it back then, but its campiness has grown on me, and it's one of my favorites to throw on, as is Batman & Robin.

@GothamSon - I maintain that if they were to have toned down the fencing scene, taken 90% of the lasers out of that fist fight in the ice palace thing, ditched the wind surfing bit, it would be good.

Michelle Yeoh's Wai Lin nearly had a spin-off too, but it's just not the kind of franchise that needs it. Supporting characters should remain unique to whatever Bond film they appear in.

@MasterMix - True, but I'd pay good money for a Jeffrey Wright Felix Leiter movie.

She was complaining about Singer and the X-Men the other day and now this. Someone’s having a bad week and I hope it gets better for her. 🤷‍♂️

I’m sure that Critically acclaimed Catwoman movie that came out around then had a black female lead..... I can’t remember who it was though l.

Being bored in '95, this is actually the first Bond film I ever watched, and I enjoyed it as a child. I liked the Jinx character enough, but I don't necessarily know if an entire spinoff was warranted for her.
