NATIONAL TREASURE Disney+ Series Adds Catherine Zeta-Jones As A "Badass Billionaire Treasure Hunter"

Disney+ has added several new cast members to its upcoming National Treasure spinoff series, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, who will play "a badass billionaire, black-market antiquities expert."

It's been a while since we had any updates on this one, but Disney+ has now shared some new details on the upcoming National Treasure series, while also announcing the main cast members.

Joining Lisette Alexis as lead protagonist Jess will be Catherine Zeta-Jones (Entrapment, High Fidelity) as Billie, who is described as "a badass billionaire, black-market antiquities expert, and treasure hunter who lives by her own code." "She transformed herself from a penniless orphan to a shrewd, stylish businesswoman and adventurer," the breakdown continues. "Billie's used to getting what she wants — and she wants the Pan-American treasure. But not just for the money. This treasure has deeper stakes for her."

It sounds like Billie might become a mentor to Jess in much the same way Sully takes Nathan Drake under his wing in Uncharted.

The show will also feature Zuri Reed (Flatbush Misdemeanors) as Tasha, Jordan Rodrigues (Lady Bird) as Ethan, Antonio Cipriano (Broadway's Jagged Little Pill) as Oren, and Jake Austin Walker (Rectify) as Liam.

National Treasure is (loosely) based on the big-screen adventures starring Nicolas Cage, but his character Benjamin Franklin Gates is not expected to appear, and it remains to be seen if the movies are even referenced.

Mira Nair is set to direct, with Jerry Bruckheimer producing alongside Cormac and Marianne Wibberley, Jonathan Littman, KristieAnne Reed, Rick Muirragui, Jon Turteltaub. No premiere date has been announced.

For some reason this would sound so much more interesting as an original IP

@bkmeijer - and this is part of the reason I really don't like the modern race/gender bending with established IPs. The national treasure movies outside of Nicolas cage really aren't that unique of stories (basically Disney's Indiana jones). So unless you're actually bringing back cage in some form, there really is no reason it can't be just it's own IP outside of name recognition. And even with name recognition that's only gonna work for fans who are gonna be angry it's effectively throwing the past movies to the side by focusing on an all new cast.

Then of course when the project almost inevitably fails they'll call everyone who chose not to see it sexist, even though we'd probably have the same reaction regardless of the gender of the protagonist, assuming it's still not cage playing his Benjamin gates character.

@MrKeyzerSoze - I find it kinda funny how this "badass woman" character description is all the hype these days, and it's being glorified as a positive, not a limitation.

Allow me to explain. In the 70s 80s and 90s we had a literal renaissance of corny cheesy but "BADASS" male led action movies. The main character had traits, but he had to be a BADASS!

Over a time, that trope became tiresome and action movies became formulaic and uninspired. It wasn't until the 2000s started adding serious tones and layers to their films that we got more modern action heroes with character growth and actual meaningful stories that supplement the action.

Modern action heroes need to be more than just a bad ass. When we describe John Wick, we talk about his psychology, about Keanus extensive weapons training to get into character fluidly, about the world building and the cutting edge filming techniques they use to push the boundaries of the action sequences, we also talk about the quality of the story an directing and camera work and cinematography..... we need much more from our male action leads these days because we've now "seen it all" so to speak.

So I find it kinda odd.... somewhat frustrating, but ultimately sad.... that now that women are getting more and more opportunities to lead action vehicles, more often than not I read or hear "She's just such a badass character!"

I roll my eyes. I couldn't care less about a badass character unless they have more to offer, male or female.
