Sharlto Copley Comments On Spike Lee's "Dark And Gritty" OLDBOY Remake

Christian Bale, Colin Firth, and Clive Owen were all offered the lead villain role in Spike Lee's Oldboy, but it was Sharlto Copley who eventually won the role after they all turned it down. Talking to MTV Splash Page at the San Diego Comic-Con following the Elysium panel, the actor shared his thoughts on the spirit of the remake, promising that it will be a worthwhile remake for fans of the original (without giving too much away of course). Check out the interview below and be sure to leave your comments on this in the usual place.

"They've been very true to the spirit of it. It's dark, it's gritty. They're not sort of softening it, which to me was important. And I'm very excited about that movie. I'm very excited about working with Spike and with Josh. I think it's going to be a film that is really worth redoing and make that idea that is such an unbelievable story accessible to maybe more people than it was originally."

Another unnecessary remake. I wonder if they will follow the original. Shocking ending!

Now THAT'S a twist!

This is why remakes are a waste.

If they wanted to stay true to the "spirit" of the original film/manga then why remake it to begin with?

Ugh.

It's not really winning a role, if everybody else turns it down, now is it?

People do understand that its not really a "true" remake as much as it is a remake of the manga Oldboy.

Whenever this comes up I wonder how many people are aware, that the original Oldboy movie already changed countless things from the source material (nationalities and names, obviously, but also the big twist of the film). I mean, many problems people have with remakes, they SHOULD have them with the Korean movie too.

The remake will be "dark and gritty"? Gee, that's good, considering the original is so dark you might not leave your house for a week after watching it. I doubt they have the balls to remain true to it.
