SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Star Jake Gyllenhaal Is A Soldier On A Mission In Trailer For THE COVENANT

MGM has released the first trailer for Guy Ritchie's The Covenant, and it features Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From Home) as an Army Sergeant who returns to the battlefield to save an unlikely ally.

Spider-Man: Far From Home star Jake Gyllenhaal has had a long and varied career, but these days, he's adding a lot of action projects to his already very impressive résumé.

Following collaborations with filmmakers like Antoine Fuqua (The Guilty), Michael Bay (Ambulance), and Doug Liman for his upcoming Road House remake, he's now teaming up with Guy Ritchie for The Covenant.

MGM has released the first trailer for the movie (via ActioNewz.com) which sees the actor play an Army Sergeant who returns to the battlefield in an effort to rescue an Afghan interpreter who saved his life.

"Guy Ritchie's The Covenant follows US Army Sergeant John Kinley and Afghan interpreter Ahmed," reads the official synopsis. "After an ambush, Ahmed goes to Herculean lengths to save Kinley’s life."

"When Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given safe passage to America as promised, he must repay his debt by returning to the war zone to retrieve them before the Taliban hunts them down first."

We're fully prepared for this to be an action-packed, hard-hitting movie, though it also sounds like a definite change of pace for the Sherlock Holmes and Aladdin director.

Dar Salim joins Gyllenhaal as the movie's co-lead, and we have a feeling this will be one to keep an eye on based on this first sneak peek. It will actually be Ritchie's second 2023 release following March's long-delayed Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.

He also has Netflix's The Gentlemen spin-off in the pipeline along with The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Aladdin 2, and the Russo Brothers' live-action take on Disney Animation's Hercules.

The Covenant is set to be released in theaters on April 21.

The premise made it sounds like yet another war movie that I might as well skip, but Guy Ritchie directing has me actually quite intrigued.

It looks fun, but when did Guy Ritchie trade-in his signature auteur style for this generic Liam Neeson action movie stuff?

Saw this the other day. Very interesting premise. I will be checking this out even though Guy is a Homerun Or Wiff director for me.

looks like wish fulfillment from every OEF and GWOT vet who just watched what happened, knowing their terps and ANA brothers just got hunted down like animals. I mean, anyone who's actually been shot at knows how much it sucks and isn't running into work acting like their John Wick, but I guess that's part of the appeal of "wish fulfillment"

The movie looks like it could be a good, kind of a modern take on the classic Rambo style character and plot. But, I couldn't help but think this could have been a great Call of Duty game. Something small scale. A coop game that's part revenge tale and part rescue mission. Imagine an entire mission where one player has to carry/drag the other, and only objective is to get out of a hostile territory. It would require so much patience and teamwork.

For the life of me I can’t find a thing to like about this guy. No matter what he’s in all I see is bubble boy.
