It was revealed earlier this week that Danny Boyle (28 Days Later) is currently the frontrunner to take the helm of James Bond 25 for MGM, something Deadline has now confirmed is the case. The filmmaker worked with Daniel Craig for a sketch featuring his take on 007 (and The Queen) for the London Olympics in 2012 and he has a very specific idea for where he hopes to take things next.

According to the trade, he and Trainspotting writing partner John Hodge are working on a script which will be the version he ultimately makes if MGM approves. However, while longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson liked Boyle's pitch, it's a couple of months away from being finished and it definitely sounds like a departure from what we're used to seeing this franchise deliver.

However, as of right now, MGM has a completed script by Casino Royale, Skyfall, and Spectre scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, a version which Boyle would not direct. However, Yann Demange ('71),  Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049), and David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) remain on the shortlist for that one. Who will end up behind the camera and while Bond will we get? Time will tell...

David Mackenzie hates tentpole films with a passion so he's a no. Denis is about to start that Dune reboot.

Go with Yann Demange. '71 is a really underappreciated film.

Chris Nolan has stated that he is very interested in helming Bond if he’s starting fresh, and this is Craig’s last film.

There’s a strong chance Nolan directs Bond 26 with a new lead :))))))

Why not both?

Well that's interesting. I don't mind that the Craig films have been direct sequels to one another, but this is the type of franchise that thrives on different people getting to give it a go as well. I'm curious about both, but after Spectre I'd rather see what the new writers have in mind.
