Paramount Pictures has debuted an adrenaline-fueled new featurette for Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick, spotlighting the unprecedented way the film managed to capture its unreal aviation sequences.

Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - Fallout) is well known for going above and beyond for his audiences and it looks like he's done it again - literally, this time - as he's gotten behind the cockpit for Top Gun: Maverick to create some of the most insane aerial sequences ever captured on film.

The highly anticipated sequel to his 1986 blockbuster will see the 3x Academy Award-nominated star reprise arguably his most iconic role to date as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, and put in charge of training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen. 

Paramount has released a stunning new featurette that shows off some of the very real action that will be seen in the film, and how Cruise, director Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion; Only the Brave) and the production team managed to pull it off.

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

@tmp3 - Here's what I don't get. How can you simultaneously be excited to see set-pieces designed around stunts in what is otherwise a bland and meandering action franchise, but then also dismiss the Mandalorian a "hollow" exercise in iconography?

Do you ever think that some people maybe don't give two shits about dangling a human being from a complicated wire rig, but actually get really excited to see the realization of creature and prop design?

@Spock0Clock - The Mission Impossible movies are designed as well-paced stunt shows with incredibly well directed action, and it succeeds on all counts. Not really sure how it's bland considering how most other big budget films shoot these sequences in front of a green screen (Deadpool 2, the Black Widow trailer) and it feels a lot less visceral.
Mandalorian posits itself as a space western, but it still has pacing issues and bad writing, on top of a protagonist who feels like a glorified action figure. Episode 5 was flat-out nostalgia porn for half an hour, and a majority of the supporting cast has been lackluster. I say this as someone who was excited to see this show after the trailers. Also this is just my opinion, of course it's not gonna be reflective of everyone's opinion.

@Spock0Clock - I never shat on other people for liking The Mandalorian, I'm glad they got more out of it than I did, but at this point you're just being asshole for some innocuous comments I made on this site in regards to how I felt about it. Just block me if my opinion on a Star Wars show gets such a strong response from you, to the point where you feel the need to mention it on a post about a Top Gun sequel.

@tmp3 - If Mission Impossible is a stunt show, then the Mandalorian is something like a theme restaurant. It's a place where people just want to spend their time.

But that's my point. You see a movie with limited narrative, character, or thematic ambition, but that excels in a particular production affect (stunts), and you love it. Fair enough, you do you.

What I'm saying is that I find it disappointing that you can't seem to understand someone else loving something else with limited narrative, character, and thematic ambition that excels at a different production affect (world and creature design).

I think you have the potential to be really thoughtful and astute in your media analysis, but it does feel like you are also very compartmentalized (and defensive). In my clumsy way, I'm just trying to engage you in a dialectic discussion to (hopefully) push you toward a more holistic perspective.

Sorry, but some of those shots may be "real" but they are composited... the Navy would never allow some of those stunts so close and the FAA would pull your license if you did them.
Tom cruise "flying" from the backseat of a two seat plane... yes. The video even shows this BTS.
Several shots of real planes flying and then composited together so they are really close... yes.
And as far as CGI... when Tom is sitting by himself in a plane flying... and they show the whole cockpit... more than likely that is "real" images of Tom composited onto the real pilot.
Now if you want to discuss CGI... you need look no further than the Aurora plane shown at the end of the trailer... the plane and tom flying the plane is pure CGI and CGI compositing with real images.
If this is "real" then everytime a news reporter gets asked to sit in the backseat of a Blue Angels or Thunderbirds demo team plane at a local airshow is the same level of "real".
