Deadline is reporting that Kate Beckinsale (UnderworldJolt) has signed on to headline the upcoming action spy thriller Canary Black, which has Pierre Morel (Taken; Peppermint) set to direct.

Matthew Kennedy wrote the script, which follows "top-level CIA agent Avery Graves (Beckinsale), who is blackmailed by terrorists into betraying her own country to save her kidnapped husband. Cut off from her team, she turns to her underworld contacts to survive and help locate the coveted intelligence that the kidnappers want."

Kennedy previously penned the Lily Collins/Simon Pegg thriller Inheritance.

Beckinsale's most recent credits include the Prime Video original movie Jolt and the Paramount+ dark comedy Guilty Party. She recently wrapped Charlie Day's comedy El Tonto and the Catherine Hardwicke-directed drama Prisoner's Daughter

She's of course well-versed in the action genre, having starred in five Underworld films as vampire badass extraordinaire Selene. The always excellent Beckinsale also starred in Van Helsing opposite Hugh Jackman (Logan; X-Men: Days of Future Past), the 2012 Total Recall reboot with Colin Farrell (The BatmanFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), and the aforementioned Jolt

Morel, who is best known for his work on the Liam Neeson-starrer Taken, is currently finishing the action-comedy Freelance, which has John Cena (Peacemaker; The Suicide Squad) and Alison Brie (Community; GLOW) in the lead roles. His other credits include From Paris with LoveThe Gunman, Peppermint, and Al Kameen.

@Lokiwasright - yeah. All these mid-budget action flicks don't excite me as they used too. Feel the genre has become too much after John Wick

She should return to the role that made her a star as vampire Seline. With a little planning and some key IP aquisitions, it is very much possible to make the Underworld franchise as big as the Marvel cinematic universe.

@Forthas - yep, let’s hear how you would make Underworld universe as big as the Marvel Universe, which by the way has like decades and decades of source material to draw from, while underworld just had lazy writers and started off with a paper thin story that was never improved on.

@CaptainMexico -

The way to make the Underworld franchise as big as Marvel is for whichever studio that owns Underworld to buy the rights to popular vampire/werewolf films and remake them in the Underworld universe. Chief among them would be the Twilight series. Before you start typing about how much that franchise sucks, YOU ARE RIGHT! ...and it still brought in $1,365,922,347 over five films. Imagine if you combined the mythology of the Underworld franchise about the Vampire/Werewolf war (which was the best thing about it), with the fan base for Twilight. For the combined universe, strip out the superpowers that the vampires have in Twilight and make the werewolves actual werewolves. The same way Marvel adapts comic book stories and changes them to conform to movies, a studio can adapt old vampire and werewolf films into the same world. Some film contenders to reboot include vampire films (The Hunger, Interview with a Vampire, Fright Night, Vampires, Lost Boys, Daybreakers, Byzantium, The Moth Diaries etc...) and Werewolf films (The Howling, Skinswalkers, Wolf, Silver Bullet, The Wolfman, Bad Moon, Wolfen, The Company of Wolves etc...). In addition new and original vampire or werewolf films could be made that are not reboots of older films. Many of these have nostalgic resonance with audiences the same way comic book films do. If done right it could be another successful shared universe for a studio.
