X-MEN '97 Writer Suggests That The Disney+ Animated Series Could Be Set In The MCU

The upcoming X-Men '97 Disney+ show will serve as a continuation of the classic animated series, but writer Beau DeMayo has now hinted that it might just be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

One of the most highly-anticipated superhero projects on the horizon is the Disney+ X-Men '97 animated series, and fans may now have even more reason to be excited.

It's already been confirmed that the series will serve as a revival/continuation of the classic show that aired on the Fox Kids Network between 1992 and 1997, but is there a chance it could also take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Head writer Beau DeMayo was asked that very question during an interview with The Direct, and while he declined to confirm or deny anything outright, his response certainly hints at the possibility that X-Men '97 might just be MCU canon.

"The one thing I can say towards [X-Men '97 and the MCU] is, I know sometimes we say, 'no comment,' and it's like, 'They’re just being obstinate.' I’m gonna go with 'no comment' here because part of the surprise will be finding that out when you experience the show."

“I can’t speak to marketing, but I think there is a degree of... you will be asking that question,” he added.

While it seems unlikely that Marvel Studios would introduce mutants to The MCU via an animated series, the nature of the Multiverse means '97 could simply be set in an alternate reality. Whatever plans may or may not be in place right now, the show is not expected to air until next year, so there's still plenty of time to tweak a few things.

Without spoiling anything, let's just say X-Men: The Animated Series fans will want to pay attention to a certain moment in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!
