Even if you're not a big Anime/Manga fan, chances are you have heard of Ghost In The Shell. Personally I think there's only a handful of really great ones, and this (at least the original one anyway) is one of them. Now fans can look forward to a brand new series called Ghost In The Shell: Arise sometime in 2013. Details are minimal, but according to Twitch, Kise Kazuchika (Blood: The Last Vampire, Dennou Coil, Neon Genesis Evangelion and of course the previous Ghost In The Shell) will direct with Ubukata Tow on board as writer. It is not know how - or if - this will tie in with the original Manga by Shirow Masamune.

I've heard really really good things about it, but i've read that it's one of those body horror-ish/Philosophical mind-[frick] movies, which aren't really my thing. Can anybody vouch for this and tell me where to start?

Very exciting, as much as I find Ghost in the Shell to be a bit convoluted it doesn't stop the series and the movies from being enjoyable. Looking forward to this, for sure

@RPD totally agree. The first movie is a classic, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence was visually a piece of work, but the story was irregular (just to use a kind word). But the Stand Alone Complex TV series was really good in many aspects: stories, script, dialogues...the best of the best, except for the cheap animation. So it was the opposite to Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.

The Solid State Society movie was a really good one, meeting all the qualities of the first movie with the TV series but more action packed.

By the way according with Wikipedia there's a live action movie in works with Steven Spielberg and Avi Arad involved.

Excellent news, excellent movie! I loved Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, and i can not wait for the sequel! The Wachowskis owe big time for GITS - which Matrix was inspired by.

I loved the original movie, but I never watched the sequel.

I heard it wasn't as great as the first one, and I started losing interest in anime when it was released.

@Dionysios They're doing Beserk movies!? I watched the whole series at a friend's house a long time ago. That was a good series.
