Japan Unveils New ULTRAMAN Anime For 2019 With A Gritty Poster And Teaser Video!

With Godzilla making such a huge comeback in Japan, it was probably only a matter of time before the Country brought back one of its most beloved Kaiju battling characters; Ultraman - but there's a catch!

The pop culture properties of yesteryear, that helped lay the foundation for the characters and stories we know and love today seem to be making a comeback in full force. Not only in America but even in Japan. The latest property at bat is none other than the kaiju fighting godfather himself, Ultraman.

The news broke over at Asahi Shinbum, where they stated that this new 3-D animated film would be helmed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed). The film will be produced by Production I.G Inc. (Ghost in the Shell, Evangelion, Batman: Gotham Knight) and Sola Digital Arts (Tekken 7 opening movie). We were also told that the cast would be announced later in the year. Considering that the manga series alone has over 2.6 million copies in print, it is safe to say that this A-list treatment is well deserved.

While everyone who remembers Ultraman as a giant, primary colored, superhero who fought Kaiju; this new interpretation will be changing the formula of what we knew of the character. According to the creators of the film, this will be a sequel to the original TV series. The synopsis follows the son of the original Ultraman. The young hero, Shinjiro Hayata, now only dons the suit of Ultraman to take on the new threats that his world holds for him. The main change? He will not transform into the colossal protector of earth.

But how Ultra can a human sized Ultraman be? Well to try and answer that, we were also given a teaser poster of the hero and a short teaser video to display the animation that you can see below. While the teaser is the same from Tokyo comic-con in 2017; the poster gives us a look at a possibly battle damaged Ultraman.

Personally, I am very intrigued by where this property could go! It has been years since I have watched Ultraman (My first exposure was Ultraman Tiga on the FoxBox) and a refreshing take could be just what this character needs!

With the movie slated for a 2019 release and two years in the making, with a stellar production crew who have more than proved themselves, one has to ask if this version of Ultraman will "measure up" to its predecessor?

Are you excited to see a classic hero return to the screen? Enticed by the animation style? What was your first introduction to Ultraman? Sound off below!

I've read the manga, and love the story. This should be great and action packed, I can't wait to see the first footage.

@MrCamw1 - It doesn't. I think the Iron Giant takes Ultraman's place, as no one outside of nerd-dom knows Ultraman

Was hoping more for a live action movie. What I'd really like to see come back, specifically in live action, is Johnny Sokko and his flying Robot. Ultraman and Giant Robot together on screen would be a childhood dream come true. Godzilla and Gamera together also while I'm at it :)

Ultraman has ALWAYS been popular in Japan, been around for years. Constantly has new TV series and movie releases. Ultraman Geed is the new series with a movie coming out this year as well.

Not crazy about the new Ultraman... I much rather see the Classic Ultraman family in a actual Hollywood budget movie!

@MasterMix - I've heard that he won't be in Ready Player One. I hope this is not the case as he is pivotal to the story.

@Blackstradamus - Substitute Iron Giant

@Pathogen - Ahh. I see. Thanks. I guess that could work (If they ignore the time limit that was imposed for Ultraman the way it played out in the book).

@Blackstradamus - I honestly don't remember, I read the book but had to struggle through it. I loved the nostalgia, but it was a badly written book

they should keep the "mono-sounding" fight scenes;

Fan of the live-action original. But the current standard of Japanese anime has only ONE style and it's way too repetitive. All the characters have the same elongated faces and over-sized eyes and the action is cheated with computer blurring plus other generic tricks.

Aramaki is the director behind the 3 Appleseeds, the Starship Troopers animated, Captain Harlock and the next Ghost in the Shell, and he's worked on Pole Position, Bubblegum Crisis, Witch Hunter Robin, Gundam IGLOO, and last but not least, Fullmetal Alchemist and one of the most beautiful anime ever made, Wolf's Rain.

I think it's safe to say that even if it's not a masterpiece, this movie will be at least super, super fun.

To anyone who likes beautiful anime and hasn't seen Wolf's Rain, do what you can to find it. The music is still out there amongst the most beautiful anime soundtracks ever made, the story is original, there's nothing like it, which is hard to say nowadays, and it's as gorgeous as it is sad. It happens in a cold future where wolves have been extinct for 200 years, except they're not. The last few of them have been passing as humans to avoid extinction. And one day, they find a girl, half human half flower, a genetic experiment created and hunted by aristocrats, who says she can take them to paradise, where they can finally rest. It's absolutely stunning.

@Asturgis - That actually sounds interesting. But...are there any high pitched high school kids with wide eyes that overreact to everything or have silly crushes on people? Cause..that's like in every anime, and its f*cking stupid immature.
Asturgis
Asturgis - 2/8/2018, 11:41 PM
@Pathogen - I know what you mean, but it's really not like that, it's basically Princess Mononoke as a show, except even darker.
Pathogen
Pathogen - 2/9/2018, 12:02 PM
@Asturgis - I don't know what caused me not to finish Mononoke, but I'll check this out. My bro-in law liked Mononoke, so maybe this will be something we watch together
Asturgis
Asturgis - 2/9/2018, 1:16 PM
@Pathogen - I suspect it's really hard to find now, it's quite old, and it will look old, so if you're not an anime fan in the first place, you might find it harsh to watch and enjoy. I really don't know :) But your brother in law might, you should tell him :)
