The folks over at VIZ Media were kind enough to hook me up with the first volume of
All You Need Is Kill, thanks to the digital-first debut that hit last week. This is Takeshi Obata's (DEATH NOTE, BAKUMAN) manga adaptation of Japanese military science fiction breakthrough light novel of the same name by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.
When the alien Mimics invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor called a Jacket and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to be reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On his fifth iteration, he gets a message from a mysterious ally – the female soldier known as the Full Metal Bitch. Is she the key to Keiji's escape or his final death?
Sound familiar? Many of you probably know this story as the more recent
Edge of Tomorrow, the film adaptation directed by Doug Liman, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt that hit theaters last month.
If you're a fan of the film, a fan of manga, or just a plain old comic lover, you'll LOVE the
All You Need Is Kill manga comic. It blew me away! The story and dialogue are both very well done and the artwork is fantastic! I read the 215 page adaptation in one sitting and couldn't put it down. I've included a few pages to wet your appetite!
Remember to read from right-to-left, or it may be confusing...
All You Need Is Kill volumes 1 and 2 are now available through the VIZ Manga platform (iOS and Android,
VIZManga.com), as well as through the storefronts for iBooks, Kindle, Nook, GooglePlay and Kobo. There's also a
All You Need Is Kill Vol. 1 Free Preview available.
Note that there is an
All You Need Is Kill: Official Graphic Novel Adaptation available that was adapted by Nick Mamatas and includes art by Lee Ferguson. It's roughly the same story, but includes different artwork.
let me know your thoughts on the film, the original story and the manga adaptation below. I'm off to download Volume 2 and see where the story picks up!
