Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters in less than two months, and The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Project Hail Mary star Sandra Hüller will appear in the Marvel Studios movie.
The actress, who earned an Oscar nomination for Anatomy of a Fall, is said to have a "cameo" role, so don't bank on her having too much screen time. The trade suggests Hüller is either playing Doctor Doom's witch mother or one of Avengers: Doomsday's mysterious Latverian Witches.
Hüller has also impressed in Zone of Interest, and most recently appeared in the hugely divisive Tom Cruise movie, Digger. Word of her casting first leaked earlier this month, so this confirmation doesn't come as a huge surprise.
In the comics, Doom's mother is a hugely important part of her son's life, and her being trapped in hell ultimately leads to Victor's facial scars. If Hüller is a Latverian Witch, then it remains to be seen whether she's a newly created character or a Variant of a familiar face.
Marvel Studios will release a new look at Avengers: Doomsday later today. However, it's expected to spotlight the Fantastic Four, so don't bank on getting any answers about Doom's followers just yet. In related news, Jeff Sneider has revealed that a recent test screening for the movie went "way better than expected," which sounds pretty positive.
"Doom's magic is an ancient magic. He is a very powerful character. He's a genius. He studies his foes. He understands them, and he's also well-planned," the Russo Brothers recently shared. "He's not somebody who just does something off the cuff. Everything is meticulous with him."
The filmmakers added, "He knows that if he's going to step on a battlefield against somebody, he has to have the tactical advantage or a power advantage against that person. So he's very difficult to beat."
In Avengers: Doomsday, beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.
Avengers: Doomsday stars Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, and Robert Downey Jr. Wyatt Russell, Simu Liu, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Mabel Cadena, Florence Pugh, Danny Ramirez, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Lewis Pullman, India Rose Hemsworth, and Wesley Holloway all make their Avengers franchise debuts.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps leads Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn join them, along with X-Men franchise stars Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, plus Deadpool & Wolverine star Channing Tatum.
Directed by the Russo Brothers, Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18.
