Avengers Endgame: Encore: Russo Brothers Explain New Ending And What Loki's Return Actually Means

Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo explain the movie's new ending, what Loki's return means for his place in the MCU, and whether Encore's added scenes will be in Avengers: Doomsday.

Avengers Endgame: Encore brought the blockbuster back to theaters this past weekend and gave the 2019 movie a new ending. Now, after Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter reunite and share a dance, they're confronted by Loki, who mysteriously offers to help them.

This is seemingly the TVA version of the God of Mischief. However, it's not outside the realm of possibility that, rather than this being an unseen moment from the TV series, Loki is somehow visiting their branched timeline from where he sits at the heart of the Multiverse.

In an interview with Empire Online, Anthony Russo justified changing what many fans consider a pitch-perfect ending for Avengers: Endgame that would be better left untouched.

"We really thought about that ending [in Endgame] as the perfect ending for Steve Rogers," he acknowledged. "And the idea of just going one moment past that perfect ending, and thinking about how radically that moment can change by just taking one step past it. That was a big part of the delight in the new idea for what Doomsday is and where the story goes."

Joe added, "The Marvel Universe is a giant experiment, and has been for years. I think part of the fun of coming back was, we thought, 'Could we reach back to pull the story forward?' And nobody's done that before. Nobody's ever had an opportunity to do it before. And this is a fluid universe, right? So you could do it in this universe, and it felt like an interesting way to start the story of Doomsday."

The filmmakers refused to comment on whether the old Steve Rogers featured in the closing moments of Avengers: Endgame was reflecting everything that happened to him in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. We also don't know how he eventually returns to the present as an old man and whether it will still happen after these movies.

Explaining they considered that the right conclusion for Captain America at the time, Anthony said that the new scene is a result of them "looking back at that movie thinking about going forward, instead of not thinking about going forward."

Adding that they used the "same lighting, same lenses, same set" to recreate the movie's final scene, Joe pointed out, "We like that it's that Rashomon [thing] – how do you look at this from a different point of view? How do you bring a different point of view to it? The magic is done with makeup. Evans and Hayley both look incredible, so it wasn't difficult, I'll say that."

As for the Loki of it all, Anthony chose his words carefully when asked how he's appearing before Steve and Peggy when we last saw him seemingly trapped at the heart of the Multiverse, serving as its battery for countless timelines.

"I mean, look, the God of Mischief proves to be the God of Mischief," Anthony teased. "Loki's one of the most fascinating characters, and he's had so many incarnations. One of the delights of Doomsday is, you're going to get a new incarnation of that character."

Interestingly, the filmmakers confirmed that the scenes featured in Avengers Endgame: Encore will not be in Avengers: Doomsday and that they were included here to bridge the gap between the two movies.

Marvel Studios has also officially released the "Silence Your Phones" PSA that played in theaters this weekend. It features the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four at the movies together, and it's suitably star-studded.

Yeah, no. It ruins his perfect ending. Hopefully the movie at least gives him a few years of happiness leading to that moment. The original ending made us beleive it was quite soon afterwards, to undo that would be weak

Yeah. Phases 1-3 were capped well with that moment. Feels like a bastardization of the finish of a good story.

@UnderBelly - Well, we see him with an infant, so assuming it’s his, he’s at least been hanging with Peggy for 9-10 months. And I imagine Steve is a bit old fashioned and takes things on the slower side, so he probably didn’t knock her up the night he got back.

@SheepishOne - Maybe, but then they did another time jump after the movie already jumped ahead 5 years after Thor went for the head.

I mean I get how they're trying to tie the movies together, but it really cheapens the ending and effect it had when it originally came out.

Hopefully they find a way to make it work.

@UnderBelly - I do think it cheapens Steve’s happy ending, but I’m not sure if I dislike it or not. On the one hand, there was something very satisfying about letting Steve retire and have the life he deserves with Peggy. On the other hand, he broke a fundamental law of the universe to do so, and he seemingly didn’t consider or didn’t realize the consequences of doing so. And it would appear that not returning to his proper timeline has caused something to happen to Doom’s universe and/or family.

Not saying Steve doesn’t deserve to be happy, but we’ve had many movies and series show us that jumping around in time does damage to the multiverse.

It means Avengers: Doomsday will be another cash grab CGI green screen soundstage slop fest. The Russo Bros are overrated hacks.

Reboot the MCU and DCU.

Interesting , I had a feeling that the new footage we got at the end of Encore wouldn’t be in Doomsday hence them saying it was “necessary” & such (whether people agreed or not) which makes sense since one of them seemed to have Doom making his mask but we know that he already has it when we see him in the FF post credits scene.

I still wish Steve’s ending remained just that but I guess it is interesting from a creative perspective atleast exploring what could be beyond the moment if him & Peggy finally sharing their dance because as Joe said , the MCU was and still is this grand experiment of storytelling almost in the vein of a mosaic and tapestry that is connected to an extent with each other so why not play into that by having the fallout from some of the decisions made in EG such as Steve going back in time be dealt with in a movie 7 years in Doomsday which is honestly just an exciting prospect imo since it keeps the possibilities of storytelling open for anything moving forward!!.

Also their comments in regard to Loki really make me think this is God of Stories Loki we are dealing with in this film which could be fun to see since we didn’t really get how he has changed in that role given he assumed that responsibility only towards the end of that beautiful Loki S2 finale!!.

@TheVisionary25 - What I will say...is I liken it to my kid.
They once asked me about something we'd both done together in the past. To paraphrase Hawkeye, we remembered it very differently. Is it a cash grab and hasty?...perhaps, but I agree and understand completely how much a moment can be framed by how it's presented. For some it tramples their head canon, but we're here now. Let's give em some rope and see what they do with it. In the MCU anyway, they've earned that much.

TheVisionary25 - 9/28/2026, 2:38 PM
@TheRevelation - I get that’s also and frankly , as I said I would have liked to have it remain how it is

But ultimately EG was the Russo’s movie and so is Doomsday thus they are allowed to go back and use that as a springboard for the future if they want to

We can like it or not as much as we want but ultimately , they aren’t our stories if that makes sense.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 9/28/2026, 3:53 PM
@TheVisionary25 - Completely agree. Actually, I like that Doomsday is directly dependent on the events of Endgame rather than just springing up a new unconnected event from the multiverse. It sort of mitigates some of the biggest issues I have with the multiverse saga.

Well, from what we learned in the Loki series, Steve unknowingly created another timeline, so it's time to stop pretending that this didn't cause any issues and now it has to be dealt with.

Sounds good to me.

I don't know how I feel about Marvel retrofitting Dr Doom's story into the MCU. The reason why Thanos felt like a major threat is because he was being built up in the background right up until Infinity War and Endgame. Dr Doom deserves that same amount of attention instead of being slotted in.

The trailers for Doomsday do look to do Doom justice in painting him as the major big bad that he is, but I'm wondering if it's enough to make him not just feel like another "baddy of the week"?
