Marvel Studios May Have Turned To AVENGERS: ENDGAME Writers To Help Shape The Troubled Multiverse Saga

The Multiverse Saga appears to be in a state of flux, but we may have some much-needed good news today with the revelation that the writers of Avengers: Endgame have taken on an advisory role at Marvel.

Marvel Studios isn't quite facing the same level of difficulties the DC Extended Universe went through, but it's clear the MCU has been going through its fair share of growing pains during the Multiverse Saga.

Much of that can be blamed on Disney for pushing them into the streaming sphere and the fact Kevin Feige has been stretched thin attempting to oversee a slate of movies alongside an expanding roster of live-action and animated TV shows. Now, after so-so reviews and lower-than-expected box office numbers, we're slowly starting to see a shift back to quality over quantity.

Of course, Marvel Studios getting back to where it needs to be isn't as simple as it probably sounds, especially with a lot of previously greenlit projects already in various stages of development. Daredevil: Born Again has been taken back to the drawing board and there are once again rumours Wonder Man is being scrapped.

The Multiverse Saga is supposed to end with two Avengers movies, The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. The former recently lost director Destin Daniel Cretton and whether either movie has a writer remains up for debate.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness is thought to have been dropped from the first movie and, depending on who you believe, Michael Waldron is working on one, both or neither.

We may have a positive update today, though, courtesy of John Rocha. Discussing the possibility of bringing the Russo Brothers back to helm the next two Avengers movies, he said, "I have been told that [Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely are, already, unofficial advisors over the last few months at Marvel."

They're the writers who penned Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, not to mention the Captain America trilogy. Bringing them on board to get this Saga back on track makes all the sense in the world, even if they're not penning any screenplays at this stage.

Speculation continues to run rampant that Kang is out as the Saga's big bad, but replacing him will be tricky. This era of storytelling already feels a tad directionless, and scrapping the Multiverse's big bad to throw someone like Doctor Doom into the mix could lead to more confusion than excitement.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow on May 7, 2027. As always, keep checking back here for updates on both movies as we have them.

Infinity War was better than Endgame, they did mistreat The Hulk though, all this scared bullshit.

@marvel72 - They are a mixed bag, IW was great but endgame shit the bed.

@marvel72 - Infinity War is a pretty close to perfect movie, with the biggest exception being how poor Hulk was treated.

@mountainman - It's the only fault I have with the movie.
mountainman
mountainman - 11/17/2023, 10:19 AM
@marvel72 - There were other smaller issues - like Drax being annoying, Etiri looking stupid, and some other minor gripes. But yeah the treatment of Hulk was the only major issue. Had they started off the “Hulk is scared” arc but paid it off in the finale with the original idea of him busting out of the Hulk Buster and going ham in that final battle, it could have been better.

@marvel72 - in fairness, that was set up for the pay off later.

I actually hate what endgame did with him more because that pay off happened off screen and he's just at peace with the hulk now.

@McMurdo - They certainly are Hulk and Thor are my two favourite comic book characters and the way Disney Marvel have treated them,I think the worse out of all the male heroes, I am not bothered seeing them again in anything.

@marvel72 - AI would love Hulk's part retconned. Dr. Strange, as part of his 1 in 14 million ways to win saw that somehow the Hulk needed to be sidelined so he travelled to a dimension to speak with the Hulk personality and convinced him to give up fighting Thanos and to not come out.

Just get back to telling cohesive stories with a good character arc in their respected individual movies and builds that up to a conclusive finale with A big crossover movie.

Tone down the cringe worthy comedy, add more intrigue and suspense and keep the look of the characters from the comics the same on screen.

I think they really miss an opportunity to have the last two phases lead up to some kind of version of the WEST COAST AVENGERS or at the very least the original version of the Defenders.

@Nomis929 -

So many comics books and stories to tell the world has been created for them but they do not take advantage what's in front of them.
mountainman
mountainman - 11/17/2023, 9:47 AM
@Nomis929 - They could have had the movies build to West Coast Avengers for sure. Wakandan Embassy is in Oakland. Ant Man and Shang Chi in San Fransisco. They’ve now introduced Namor, She Hulk, Hercules, announced Wonder Man.

Had they planned it out right, they could have given the audience the alternative lighter hearted Avengers team as a palette cleanser post Endgame.

Hell, they could have also mentored the Young Avengers being set up mostly on D+.

It’s like the template was kind of there, and they just didn’t build to it right.
Nomis929
Nomis929 - 11/17/2023, 9:56 AM
@mountainman - Exactly. All the elements were lining up and appear that the direction they were heading.

And keep Hawkeye as the link between the old team and the new. similar to the comics.
Timerider
Timerider - 11/17/2023, 10:13 AM
@Nomis929 - I agree with all of that, especially the cringe worthy comedy. It just falls flat or is ridiculous most of the time. Be less funny and more serious.
mountainman
mountainman - 11/17/2023, 10:17 AM
@Nomis929 - Yes. Boseman’s death and Renner’s injury threw some wrenches into this, but they still could have done it.

Had Phase 4 built into a cohesive story with an Avengers film to cap it, the MCU would be in a better place.

The West Coast Avengers would eventually be punching above their weight class, which would be the catalyst to reform the main Avengers team with more heavy hitters.

This stuff doesn’t seem complicated but somehow it is to the MCU.

@Timerider - It takes away from the gravitas of the suspense from a movie so much.

Bringing Markus & McFeely and the Russos back would sure out this in good hands, but I wouldn't mind the writers and directirs from Loki working on it. Trust them as well

The russos on multiple occasions have said their dream project is secret wars....let them do it...they have proven themselves already. This was one of feiges biggest mistake, bringing all these new faces instead of keeping people who know wtf they are doing.

JustAWaffle
JustAWaffle - 11/17/2023, 12:58 PM
@Order66 - I can’t see an option where it would work out than going full throttle with it. If they ignore it then it’s a gaping hole that won’t be forgiven. If they belittle it to a show or a lesser threat in a young avengers film it’ll just fuel the flame of phase 4-5 hate.

They need to give a satisfying end.

If not cancelled, wouldve been great if Joss Whedon helms this.

Let's see what these people did

- dont know how to handle superpowered characters like hulk and vision. In civil war, they made vision a pacifist and his action sequences are just flying around laser beaming stuff. The hulk became a joke

- cant handle the complexities of Black Widow. Compare anything they have done to that interrogation scene with Loki in Avengers 1

- they rode the hype of phases 1-3, started by Whedon

- the MCU is in a deep hole now. Without that hype train to ride on, i dont think they can work from the bottom. Look at their filmography after endgame

thewanderer
thewanderer - 11/17/2023, 11:05 AM
@vectorsigma - this is silly.

They wrote many of the most beloved movies in the MCU.

-Infinity War
-Endgame
-Civil War
-Winter Soldier
-Thor: The Dark World (not beloved, just including their full involvement in the MCU)
-Captain America: The First Avenger

They also assisted in the first Guardians script.

They didn’t ride the hype, they created it.
