Marvel Studios Rumored To Be Eyeing GRAVITY Director Alfonso Cuarón For AVENGERS: SECRET WARS

Following recent reports that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi is being eyed to helm Avengers: Secret Wars, we can now add another name to the list of possible candidates...

Believe it or not, it's now been four years since we last sat down to watch an Avengers movie in theaters.

Unfortunately, it's going to be a while before we see Earth's Mightiest Heroes assemble on screen again because Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was recently pushed back to May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow on May 7, 2027. The delays are a result of the ongoing WGA strike but we know Marvel Studios is also looking to take its time with upcoming projects, a stark contrast from Phase 4.

It's previously been reported that both movies will serve as our final farewell to the original six Avengers, with one scooper going so far as to claim Secret Wars will "very likely [set] up a soft-reboot," serving as a "send-off for not only the entirety of the Fox-Verse, but the MCU that we’ve all grown to love."

With that, we'll be left with an "All-New, All-Different MCU" (presumably thanks to a new Sacred Timeline). Of course, this isn't the only big rumour we've heard recently as both Jeff Loveness (Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania) and Michael Waldron (WandaVision) have supposedly been fired from their respective Avengers movies!

It's an interesting development if true, though Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton remains attached to helm The Kang Dynasty. As for Secret Wars, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi is said to be on Kevin Feige's radar.

Now, though, another contender may have entered the race.

According to Daniel Richtman, Children of Men and Roma director Alfonso Cuarón is near the top of Marvel Studios' list for who should direct what will perhaps be the MCU's biggest movie to date.

While an unexpected choice, the filmmaker is no stranger to commercial fare after directing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for Warner Bros. Known for lengthy and groundbreaking tracking shots, it's easy to imagine Cuarón delivering a very special movie if he has a vision for Secret Wars

As always, we'd recommend taking this news with a pinch of salt until we hear from the trades. With the Fantastic Four rumour mill slowing down (we're hearing the Jake Gyllenhaal claims are correct, but those you might have seen about Matt Shakman leaving the movie are not), "scoopers" seem to be shifting focus to The Avengers franchise.

Do you think Cuarón should direct Avengers: Secret Wars?

Should be someone who's already done an MCU movie. Not sure what he knows about the Multiverse anyways.

He's a proven heavyweight, which is what they need to extricate themselves from the gordian knot they have been tying since Endgame came out.

They should ask Yorgos Lanthimos to do Blade next and maybe they could get Jodorowsky to direct F4

I much preferred his Dance Of Reality, tbh, being the 1st part. But yeah, he's legit one to be excited for. One of the few remaining surrealists.

I wonder if he can gravitate audiences back to the MCU.

Aside from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Alfonso Cuarón doesn't seem like the kind of director who would gravitate towards an MCU film.

Riiiiight, same way Spielberg was sure to helm F4 couple of years ago...

I think they are playing with fire with this Kang Dynasty plan and the B level Avengers. That date is way out too. You can only make so many wrong moves with an IP before you lose the audience. Look at Star Wars. After so many missteps, even Ashoka isnt doing well. Ever think an Indy can bomb so hard? Feige better be careful here.

No one cares about any of these new characters to fill a theater. Who would they even be?

Falcon Cap
Shang Chi
Captain Marvel
Shuri Panther
Spidey ?
Ant-man ?
She-hulk ?
Ms. Marvel ?
Strange ?
White Vision ?
Hulk ?
Thor ?

I dont expect DD, Wanda or Moonknight.

@AvalonX - MCU was som popular that Feige & Disney thought they could do anything & get away with it. It was the same attitude AMC and TWD showrunners had when TWD was bringing in ratings around 20 million an episode.

So like TWD, MCU showrunners thought they could get rid of popular characters played by actors fans loved in the roles. They thought they could start preaching to their audience and talk down to them when their Hollywood bullshit! Feige knew Marvel Now was DOA in the comics but he thought he was sooo great that he could force MCU fans to love it in the MCU.

TWD suffered a huge ratings drop-off and a lot of money it could have made. The MCU has suffered a huge drop off in popularity and box office. It's TV series have been disasters. Secret Wars has been Feige's last big card to play. And he will no doubt cave in to RDJ's demands and make a deal to get him to at least cameo. He'll use every cameo he can to boost Secret Wars and save his ass. But it won't work. Whatever Secret Wars does at the box office, it will not help Feige reverse the damage he caused.

As it looks now, the MCU is so out, Secret Wars will do less than half of what Endgame did. We'll know more after we see The Marvels box office take.

@PartyKiller - I agree with everything you said. The problem with RDJ is Avengers SW isnt even due until 2027. The guy will be like 62. You could pluck him from earlier in the timeline and put him back but Marvels version of time travel seems to really be multiverse travel. Plus, like Loki, he would then be a variant and it breaks all their rules. I think its intriguing to bring back Evans, RDJ from a universe where they never went back and just lost. That would be interesting to have those versions rejoin the Avengers. Then at the end, when they inevitably make a new sacred timeline, you have the recasted versions show up. Actually, against the beyonder. I suppose you can have both but when its over, only the young versions remain.

Have to imagine this is in part because of how he jumped into the Harry Potter franchise and delivered one of the best movies of the series (if not the best for many people).
