AVENGERS: ENDGAME Star Chris Evans Explains Captain America's "Avengers Assemble!" Line Delivery

Captain America saying "Avengers Assemble!" in 2019's Avengers: Endgame is without a doubt one of the MCU's most iconic moments, and Chris Evans has now explained his approach to reeling off that line...

Chris Evans spent a long time playing Captain America in the MCU, but it wasn't until his final movie, Avengers: Endgame, that we finally got to hear him say, "Avengers Assemble!" It was a chill-induing moment, but many fans have questioned over the years why the actor delivered that iconic line in such an understated way.

Doing the rounds to promote Lightyear, Evans was asked why his Captain America didn't shout that battle cry the same way as the character's comic book counterpart.

"It almost feels like it should be shouted," the actor acknowledges in the video below. "I was going to shout the first take, and then it just felt like I knew what the camera was doing. You know that people are waiting for it. And it almost felt like a nice juxtaposition to go underneath it and then have everyone around me scream. And we tried that the first take, and then the Russos just said, 'That's it, don't even do the screaming one.'

"And I actually don’t know if we ever even tried it... I obviously tried it at my home the night before. And again, it could have worked," Evans continued. "I like the fact that you almost have to lean in."

Praising Chris Hemsworth for the "primal roar" Thor lets out moments later, the former Captain America said he believes it would have "been strange if I had screamed, and everyone screamed," adding that "it almost felt better being more steely." We can't disagree, as the scene remains one of the MCU's most iconic and memorable.

Elsewhere in the interview, Evans was asked how saying "Avengers Assemble!" compares to Lightyear's iconic "To Infinity...And Beyond!" line. "Well, certainly [Lightyear] felt a little more intimidating," he admits. "At least with 'Avengers, assemble,' no one had done it before. With this one, you know that someone else has kind of put their stamp on it. It’s an iconic line because someone else made it iconic. So I was honoured to say this line. You get goosebumps every time you do it."

It's a lot of fun hearing from the MCU alum as he continues to look back at his time as Steve Rogers. While there have been rumblings he might reprise the role, the focus will be shifted to Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson in Captain America 4 and, if we do see Evans again, it probably won't be until Secret Wars rolls around however many years from now.

Lightyear is now playing in theaters.
