Cobie Smulders Says S.H.I.E.L.D. Is Agent Coulson's Show

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter Cobie Smulders reaffirms ongoing discussions with ABC about guest starring and/or joining their television show based on Marvel Comics' S.H.I.E.L.D. and drops a clue as to which character will be the focus.

I can't really talk too much about it because there's some talks about it, regarding Maria Hill. But Joss Whedon is a genius and any opportunity that I have to say words that he has written I will take. Clark [Gregg] this is sort of his show. I love Clark and want to be apart of it. But we'll see.

We know pretty much nothing about the plot of the show and this is our first indication that Coulson is indeed the focus of the show. Initially rumored as being just a cameo in the pilot, it was then revealed that Coulson will be an ongoing cast member and now we have this clue from Smulders that Coulson will be the Capt. Mal Reynolds of the group. If you look at Whedon's past television work, his history is rich in ensembles but there's always a clear-cut central character among the cast. Looks like Agent Coulson's legend will be growing ever larger.

I mean they were going to go after Loki anyway and they were going to have to come together regardless. Coulson's death never struck me as what brought them together. Hell Banner, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America had minimal interations with him. As I recall Steve and Coulson only met during the Avengers. I dont know how anyone actually ever believed he was dead to begin with.

^no, the avengers needed his death to come together and put aside their differences. his 'death' at that moment in time was pretty meaningful.
juansam26
juansam26 - 1/28/2013, 2:02 PM
That has nothing to do with it, just cause they had no interaction with him doesn't mean they didn't care for a human life dead right in front of them because they couldn't come together and prevent it in time.

Good to know....Also I find it funny how Coulson *in the end and if he's in every episode and every episode is an hour* will in the end have had more screentime than all the Avengers.

At the end of the day Coulson's death still never came off as the rallying call that brought them together in my opinion.

My best guess: Coulson survived getting skewered by Loki but physically can't work in the field anymore, so he's stuck at a desk job, sending younger agents out and monitoring them from headquarters, dispensing equal amounts of advice and snark. Sort of playing the role of the lieutenant on a detective show. Or Giles.

As for Fury lying about Coulson's death, the Avengers finding out could be the straw that broke the camel's back, leading them to break ties with SHIELD and going off on their own. The already don't trust Fury. You know eventually Marvel wants to have the Avengers and SHIELD at odds with each other, Civil War-style.

I'd mucher rather it just be Fury lying (for the greater good) than some crazy contrivance or LMD nonsense. But I trust Joss.

So.... Agent Coulson's death is more valuable than "He killed 80 people in 2 days". Really?

@BIGBMH
With all of SHIELDs advanced technology, its not that far fetched they could have fixed is wound.
@Jollem, Nick Fury is a manipulative liar.

"that's assuming the 'vengers crew just wouldn't have done anything to stop loki's scheme if coulson didn't "die""

Oh yes and I'm SURE if Coulson hadn't died The Avengers would have just sat around and not stopped the alien attack

Coulson's death was obviously a rouse by Fury and Coulson to...what was it Fury said:

'They needed the push'

This fits right in with Fury's character and how he manipulates the marvel super heroes and had done so for many years in the comics...so it's not a hard push to see Coulson return...

I say that Coulson has an LMD of himself, as Stark mentioned in the Avengers. This will explain his participation in the show.

totally agree im a great dc comics lover more so than marvel but bringing coulson back is a brilliant idea i mean its not really hard when you think of all the comic characters that have seemingly died and then been brought back somehow
hope we see abomination, the leader and some of the other villains and projects shield has locked away as cameos

I have no problem with Coulson still being alive. When the show comes out it will have been a year and a half since we saw him bite it in THE AVENGERS -- which is a bit longer than comic book characters stay dead nowadays ;-)

I still think that the show will take place during phase one. Phase two isn't complete yet and you don't want to have to dance around a constantly changing continuity when making a television show. Setting the show in phase one gives them a clear cut timeline to work with and expand upon.

the one thing I like to remind people about The Avengers is that if you remember the scene after Coulson's death. Maria Hill says to Fury that she was going to send Paramedics, and Fury said, no. (he paused then said) they are already here. yet they were never called. Coulson"s body was gone and it was never mentioned, but Maria seemed surprised when Fury made his comment about them being there already.

Is it me or have we not heard a peep about Agent Sitwell. Coulson is the tops and Agent Sitwell is a close second as far as likeability. He did a fantastic job in "Item 47" and if he's not on the T.V. show, I hope he gets more face time in the movies.

either coulson faked his death (mentioned already), or this takes place during and right before the events of the Avengers. Looks at all the people they passed up before seetling on the movie's roster.

Has anyone considered the Coulson has been dead the entire time? I mean, pre-Iron Man 1? He's Shield's first life-model decoy, based on a real person who died well before the Marvel Movieverse started? Just a thought.
