Why Michael Rapaport Is Perfect For Hank Pym!

Why I think Michael Rapaport is the perfect choice to play Hank Pym in The Avengers!

After seeing Michael Rapaport play a hilarious jailbird idiot/nutcase in My Name is Earl to a deadly serious manipulative Homeland Security agent in Prison Break, I realised that this guy was one versatile, talented actor-a fact many seem to agree with...Time Magazine voted Rapaport was voted 1# On Most Underated Actors of ALL time. Seeing him in these two roles suddenly made me think that Rapaport would be perfect to play a fairly complex character like Hank Pym.

Since Pym's first appearence in Tales to Astonish #27 (Jan, 1962) the charatcer has had FIVE superhero aliases - Ant Man, Giant Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket and most recently The Wasp.

One of the most interesting aspects of Pym's personality is the fact he suffer from a serious inferiority complex and feelings of inadequacy when comparing his powers to those of Thor or Iron Man. As well as this he is also a schizophenic and has suffered from numerous personality crises leading to the above mentioned constant change of identities. Of course, another of Pym's biggest storylines is the striking of his wife, Janet (also known as The Wasp)

I believe that Rapaport diverse acting styles would be ideal in portraying this personality. Although he has been in many films and tv shows, just the two shows I have seen him in are actually pretty near representations of how Pym could be portrayed. I dont think that Rapaport would have a problem playing an intelligent scientist or a man with issues such as the ones described above. Casting an actor who is also a cood comedian may also be a perfect chance to add some humour to The Avengers (similar to Ryan Reynolds brief scenes as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine adding some light relief in an otherwise serious film). Finally and perhaps quite importantly, Rapaport also looks the part and I personally dont find it hard to imaging him in any of Pym's various costumes (Yellowjacket being my first choice).

If Marvel cast Rapaport as Hank Pym, I think that a what could otherwise be an unimportant charatcer when compared to Iron Man, Thor or Captain America could instead be made an integral part of The Avengers especially when it comes to the creation of Ultron (a saga I would love to see) or perhaps with an actor of this calibre, The Avengers could be used as a perfect springboard for the long rumoured Antman film (which in my opinion would benefit from the inclusion of The Wasp and again the above mentioned characters and storylines which could tie in to any possible future Avengers films)

So...Rapaport has my vote, does he have yours?

Good call on this guy.

Program, yeah, it's called Deep blue sea.

and Eckhart was good in The core, but we haven't seen an actor cross from a major DC movie to a major Marvel movie yet, or vice versa, but I don't think he'll be the one to do it.

As for you Joob......at least give ONE reason why he's not a good person for the role if you want to be taken seriously...and something other than "because he sucks" please.

Yeah, he's a good actor. But the face just doesn't work for me.

MarkCassidy - 5/3/2009, 6:37 AM
Yeah i think he could pull it off..i agree with spilox about the face though..a bit strange looking for a superhero! Still, not a big deal.

Eckhart for Cap!..you know it makes sense

Does not look like pym at all.
too scawny.

JoshWilding - 5/3/2009, 9:07 AM
see, i think that fact that he doesnt look like your typical superhero is actually one of the reasons he is perfect for the role! Pym is after all aan insecure scientist and not a super soldier like Captain America!

I didn't even like him in Friends... It made Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance in 3rd Rock seem oscar worthy. And that's really not saying much. To me he's like a sucky Barry Pepper. At times, i honestly thought he suffered from "slight retardation". You know, kinda like someone with down syndrome that pour's all his heart in his performance that makes you kinda not hate him but turn a blind eye... ya know. In laymens terms, in my book, he's as good as Timothy Olyphant.... really not a compliment here.

Yes Roar, putting someone that looks 45 on his best days in a role of a 25 year old super soldier... makes sense LOL

JoshWilding - 5/4/2009, 2:11 PM
is friend the only thing you've ever seen him in SHAMAN? the guy is an amazing actor! no offence but you're talking complete and utter shit! sorry but reading your comment makes me think the only one with "slight retardation" here is YOU!
Dragodon
Dragodon - 5/4/2009, 10:11 PM
I agree joshw. I have seen him in some movies and TV shows. He was serious in a horror TV show, Night Visions and comical in My Name is Earl. He was in a movie called Special, where he plays a guy who takes an experimental drug and starts believing that he is a real superhero. I'd say that he could pull it off for Hank Pym.

Shaman - 5/5/2009, 7:07 AM
LOL, yeah actually, Friends is the only thing i've seen him in. I wanted to watch that movie Dragodon was mentionning but never got around to it. I'm not saying he sucks in everything he does, i was merely giving an analysis of his performance in Friends. Notice how i didn't say he couldn't be able to land Hank Pym? That means that i'm aware that he could have done something good enough to warrant your editorial but i just haven't seen it yet. You can't honestly tell me that EVERYTHING he's done is stellar, since he did suck in Friends. But that also happens to many actors where they have best and worst performances. So yeah, you can calm down now, it's not like i insulted your mother.

That's a fair point SHAMAN and its a pretty good point as well! Im sorry for snapping, lol, but Im desperate to see this guy as Hank Pym. I just think a film like The Avengers might give him the recognition that in my opinion he deserves!

Ah well...it not my choice anyway. Wait and see I guess!

Shaman Cap was sposed to be in his mid thirties when he was frozen, and Eckhart looks to be..in his mid thirties! I know your pic is Jensen Ackles, but i think he only looks about 19 and i would like an established, versatile actor to play Cap. Eckhart has been outstanding in Thank You For Smoking, The Pledge, TDK..among others. Ackles has been in Supernatural. I dont watch the show so i cant comment on his acting ability..but i did see him in a couple of eps of Smallville and thought he was average at best. Im not even sure Eckhart is totally right for the role, hes just the best name i have heard thrown around. I just dont want some flavor of the month pretty boy playing Captain freaking America yknow?

Shaman - 5/5/2009, 1:30 PM
joshw24- LOL, we good, we good :) And you're right! If he does land this gig, he'll be in everybody's good graces.

Rorschach01- I'm pretty sure Cap was supposed to be frosen in his mid twenties... "born on July 4, 1917, Rogers had been preserved in a block of ice since 1945..." that makes him... 28. Eckhart can't pull off 28. Even though he would be the best candidate for an older version of the character, hands down. Yes i do prefer Ackles but i wouldn't mind if they aged him through creative liberties and took Eckhart... i'm just saying... keeping the character's history intact, it wouldn't make sense.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 5/5/2009, 4:14 PM
Rorschach01- Ackles was'nt great in Smallville ,but in Supernatural...well, you couldnt ask for a more talented actor. he seems to be able to pull off any kind of scene from action to funny to emotional but i agree he isnt right for Cap (my choice being Wentworth Miller) However,he is perfect for Hawkeye in my opinion.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 5/5/2009, 5:36 PM
I thought he just got injected with the serum in 45 and fought the war for years before being frozen..but i could be wrong. Anyway he always just seemed in his 30s to me..both as he was drawn and his personality. I mean can you imagine Iron Man, Thor etc following an Akles/Miller/Kutcher/Padelacki/Tatum into battle? I cant. I would actually prefer Mathew Mcaunahy(spl?) than any of those dudes..as much as it pains me to say!

I'd Prefer TJ Thyne from Bones.

Shaman - 5/6/2009, 9:26 AM
I understand that EVERYONE has a problem with IronMan Hulk and Thor following Akles/ Miller/ Kutcher/ Padelacki/ Tatum but the fact is that Stark is a rich playboy who ALWAYS had a problem following Cap. It's in the books. So even if Eckhart got the part, Stark still wouldn't follow his orders. Thor is a god, he LOGICALLY wouldn't follow Akcles nor Eckhart for that matter. But he follows Cap for his presence, morals and values regardless of his age. Hulk, well Banner is a scientist for the military. It's his job to follow orders from high ranking officers. So i really don't get why everybody thinks that these guys can't go along side someone like Ackles. To me it's just not a good argument. I do also understand that you've always thought of Cap as a middle aged man but he never was. Cap never reached 40. But his comanding presence and experience is what transpires and of ALL of the young guys above mentionned, Ackles is the only single one to have successfully demonstrated leadership and experience before. When you look at Dean WInchester (ackles in supernatural) you automatically see that he's been doing what he does for a very long time and also is a natural born leader.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 5/6/2009, 12:07 PM
Its not that i cant see it story wise, i just dont want to see it! I want to see RDJ and Ed Norton take orders from someone on their level..acting wise. I just want the leader of this team of established and awesome(pending Thors casting) guys to be as big a kahuna as they are. That means experience making movies, that means big name star power, that means proven acting chops..that means nor Jensen Akles! Not for my money at least. They probably will end up going for a younger unknown guy for Cap but im just saying that i wish they didnt.

Shaman - 5/6/2009, 1:45 PM
Good point, very fair and understandable. They would need Pitt i guess. Cause as much as Eckhart looks like "The American Way" freshly vomitted, he's not "supersoldier" cute, ya know? He looks like the ol' grizzled "veteran" Cap. Something i'd love to see, just not as an origin story. And Mark Valley... has the look, but isn't in the Kahuna league either... I'm tired of Pitt so who else would you suggest??? They're gonna screw us and get Afleck in the end. Had he not made Daredevil (which i enjoyed), he'd have made a good Cap... kinda looks like a young Eckhart. Has the same chin.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 5/6/2009, 2:15 PM
Affleck actually might have been ok..maybe!..hes not near as bad as people make out. And i thought he was good in Daredevil too. Pitt would have been great..although he does tend to shine in less fantasy orientated roles like Jesse James or Babel. I know im gonna get shit foe this but yKnow who would be great? Will Smith! I know Caps not a black guy but aside from that issue, i really think he would be perfect.

I see why you're concidering him cause he has:

1- The stardom
2- The talent
3- Shines in action movies

But he does have the wrong skin color... Who else that's not already a Superhero, falls in those categories???
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 5/7/2009, 7:48 AM
Not many people! Jim Caviezel? If you can be Jesus you can br Cap! Iv heard Leo Dicaprios name thrown about..hes got the talent but not the look. Brad Pitt really would have been perfect like 10 years ago, the guy is starting to show his wrinkles a bit. [frick] it i give up, have Akles!
Shaman
Shaman - 5/7/2009, 8:30 AM
LOLOL But dude, you just gave a good pic man!!! Jim Caviezel would be a great Cap!!! And as for Pitt, Benjamen Button showed us that his little wrinkles can be photoshopped off his face so he also would be good. But then again, i would of course like it if they went for Ackles. Them be three fine candidates man!!!

Now go check me new fan fic LOL

well than, as far away from topic as this conversation has gone. I must say, that I agree with....EVERYONE!!! lol. sorry. No, honestly @Joshw24. I like your pick. I've seen rappy in quite a few things. strangely none you've mentioned. But still, I believe he is a very good actor and would bring a "different approach to a super hero. Much like, hmmmm....Hank Pym. Very good call on that. @Rorshach. I honestly hate the idea of Aaron Eckhart ever being Captain America. He's a cool guy. But it wouldn't feel right to me. Ackles is my personal favorite. lol. @Shaman. I hate the thought of Jim Caviezel as Cap more than Eckhart actually. I like him as an actor. But I don't think I've ever seen a role that shows me he has the enthusiasm to wear the stars and stripes.

Shaman - 5/8/2009, 7:50 AM
That is true though... i don't think Jimmy here was even born with the capacity to be enthusiastic. He was perfect for Christ's sake. (notice no exclamation points LOL)

If he can act anywhere near how he did in Special, he should get the part. he really showed off his acting skills in that movie, so yeah im all for him as Hank Pym.

in the most recent episode of Prison Break, he was in a fight scene that showed he's pretty good at the action stuff as well as acting. he also has a great chemistry with co-star Wentworth Miller-my #1 Captain America choice
