Costume Designer Talks Bane's Outfit; Teases Story Related Changes To Batman's Suit

Hit the jump to hear what Oscar winning costume designer Lindy Hemming had to say about her work on The Dark Knight Rises, including the looks for Bane and Bruce Wayne as well as a very intriguing tease about the new Batsuit.

Talking to GQ Magazine, costume designer Lindy Hemming has revealed her inspiration for her take on Bane in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. "Bane was meant to look like a cross between a dictator and a revolutionary," she revealed. "I designed the coat myself - it took a year. We took inspiration from a Swedish army jacket and a French Revolution frock coat and amalgamated the two. It was a pain to have made, because in LA shearling is not their sort of thing: there weren't the tailors who could work with the fabric. It's funny: as soon as it was finished, GQ did a feature about shearling coats, so it looked like I had copied you!"

A little less work was required when it came to Bruce Wayne however. The playboy billionaire will once again be sporting his typically suave Armani suits. "Christian Bale was in Armani in the last film and I used Armani again for character reasons. Bruce Wayne is himself playing a part: that of a wealthy man who owns an enormous company and so a luxury brand like Armani seemed the right choice." However, most interesting was what Hemming had to say about Bale's other costume - the Batsuit. "There's very few changes. The only modifications are to do with the story. But I can't tell you what they are..."

Michael Caine as Alfred
Gary Oldman as Commissioner Jim Gordon
Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox
Tom Hardy as Bane

Thought this would of been about Banes mask mainly, who cares for a puffy coat when the main deal is his mask.

I don't know why people are bitching about Bane's mask....its way better than the full on gimp mask, you can see more of Bane's actual face, much better for a film.

You guys don't seem as happy that we got such a class upcoming actor such as Tom Hardy to play the role, who portrays so much with his eyes, facial expressions and body movement...perfect for Bane. Tom Hardy is one of my favourite actors right now, when he got announced to play Bane I was over the moon.

Stop the Bane bitching and wait for the film to come out, then judge!

/rage over :)

Fanboys... always complaining about every detail, even though they know that they could never themselves do what the directors of these movies do.
Especially Nolan.

@Xionn

You're thinking logically.
You actually sound like a person who likes good films in general rather than just being a petty fanboy.

Most of the people here don't care about good films outside of their CBMs

So they don't understand the logistics of making films (what works cinematically, and what doesn't work cinematically)

If they got the opportunity to make this film they way they wanted to, it would be horrible.

AGREED.

That modified pic Froggy posted is nice too. I would certainly like more contrast in the carbon fiber and the rest of the "nomex" in the suit, maybe a lighter and darker tone to simulate the grey and black.
I like the suit tho, I'm glad they kept it. When he went into detective mode in TDK I lost my shit. That was inspired. Literally.

@NoRegrets

It's not even about how it looks.

You can't expect an actor to give a compelling preformance with his entire face covered. It just can't happen.

MOVIES ARE A DIFFERENT MEDIUM FROM THE COMICS!!!
THERE WILL BE CHANGES!! EXCEPT THAT!!

@MovieMann I read these boards everyday at work, following the latest news etc, I hardly post unless I really feel like I want to get something across. Most of the time I see lots of Avengers vs. The Dark Knight Rises battle. I just felt that I had to get that out because I really do think Tom Hardy is such a class actor, I have Bronson, The Take, Wuthering Heights, Tinker Tailor S.S, Inception and Warrior on Blu-ray and he stands out in all of his performances. That mixed with his Rising Star Bafta award last year shows this guy is someone we should be really proud of to get this part.

He plays a lot of bad ass roles in his films, especially The Take and Bronson...Bane is a bad ass villain and I can't wait to see how Tom challenges the role. He is a fairly newish actor and he is now in some of the biggest films, he didn't get there by luck.

I think the full on mask like in the comics may have looked a lot worse than the smaller mask, Nolan HAD to have a mask or it would not be Bane, and I think he made the right choice with the one he picked, it looks menacing and not too overwhelming that we cannot see Hardy's expressions.

In terms of Tom Hardy's size, well I don't think it will bother me too much, the guy is an actor and he did work hard to bulk up for films such as Warrior, Bronson and TDKR, he has enough size + acting skill to pull of something special.

Could you imagine some huge guy playing Bane who is half as good actor as Hardy...it would be a complete let down. The villain is more important than the heroes in these films.

They could've made him look alot closer to his CB counterpart. He looks like a completely different character . Which, once again, straws away from the source material. SMH.....
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 3/6/2012, 9:52 AM
So far, what I've seen being done with BANE is awesome. Hardy, like Ledger, may have lost himself in the role. I see trailers of Hardy's other films and it's a totally different person.

I get the sense of TRUE, CLASSIC, villain when I see Hardy's Bane. A simple mind would of course crave the character to have a [frick]ing wrestling monster voice. Too dumb to understand the artistic contrast of Bane's look and how he expresses himself. This Bane could be a classic Bond villain with his eccentric style.

The fire rises on a bitch.

The mask is made that way because they are not going the traditional venom route. I like it because it looks more intimidating than the wrestling mask.

Seriously a lot of sense is being made here about Bane's mask. You can't cover his face through the whole movie or it wouldn't matter what actor it is under the mask. You guys are crying about the luchador mask?? Lmao. I would hate to see any CBM you directed.

@Azazel
How do you know Nolan even put in this emotional connection. We've seen hardly anything from Bane to even make that assumption. For all we know, they just thought the mask looked cool at the time.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 3/6/2012, 9:58 AM
I just saw Warrior last night and it was quite good! Hardy was excellent in it and though he is a little short the guy is thick as [frick]. He can play the role of a brute really well as he tore up a few guys in that movie simply by overpowering them. Can't wait for this movie!

"Could you imagine some huge guy playing Bane who is half as good actor as Hardy"

I don't have to Imagine all I have to do is watch Batman an Robin. (When Fanboys get the look they want, that is what they end up with).

I agree Tom Herdy is an Amazing up and coming actor, he is litterally the talk of every movie he is in.

I read a review for "This Means War" and the reviewer said the movie was actually worth watching because of Tom Hardy.

when being Interviewed about the upcoming movie "Wettest County" Jessica Chastain(also a great up and coming actress) was singing praises about her costar Tom Hardy, she worked with Gary Oldman and Guy Pearce in the film, and Tom Hardy's preformance is the one that stuck with her.

Ryguy88 - 3/6/2012, 10:00 AM
Benjamite, he's making assumptions based on Nolan's past work and how he handled characters. I guess its an educated guess.

Gizmo...that Costume in TASM is just one of a long list of shitty looking things from the movie. If we're just talking about the costume, we have the yellow Blu Blocker eye lenses, the basketball/dodgeball texture, the Nike Shox, the web shooters that are less than a couple of inches long that we're supposed to believe is able to shoot a line of webbing stronger than steel and tens of hundreds of feet long...Sure bud.

Bane however, looks like Bane. Basic shape of the mask, Bare armed with a tank top, Military pants with Combat boots...The spirit of the whole thing is still there.

Spider-Man's outfit looks like something McG created.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 3/6/2012, 10:03 AM
@GizmoEl Spider-man is a comicbook Icon defined by his costume. So yeah, when his suit is butchered for no good reason, people notice. I could ask ten people in a row who Bane is and they wouldn't know. Just US.

New argument. Thanks.

@Benjamitesandwich

Haha really?

Looking at Christopher Nolan's entire Filmography, do you actually think that he went with that mask just because he "thought the mask looked cool at the time"?

AsianVersionOfET - 3/6/2012, 10:05 AM
If they used the luchador mask I would NOT see this movie. I love the way Bane looks. So intimidating. I don't understand all the hate. Oh wait, the answer's simple; Whedonites....
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 3/6/2012, 10:08 AM
I like both Spiderman's and Bane's costume. I think the Spiderman costume needed an update to differentiate itself from Raimi's Spiderman. Bane's needed an update because a giant mexican wrestler is pretty lame villain for a movie.
