After celebrating the 40th anniversary of Raiders of the Lost Ark last week, Pop Jedi returns to the realm of comic book movies to celebrate the recent anniversary of Batman Returns.

The 1992 sequel to the 1989 Batman film saw the return of director Tim Burton as well as Michael Keaton re-donning the cape and cowl. It also featured the addition of Danny DeVito as The Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle/Catwoman and other great actors including Christopher Walken, Michael Gough, Pat Hingle, Michael Murphy, and Vincent Schiavelli.

Join Pop Jedi hosts Rob DiLauro, Di Marie, and JennaSayWhat as they cover some of the latest pop culture news, including Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, and Loki, as well as their discussion and celebration of another film anniversary!

After the phenomenon that was Tim Burton's "Batman", he came back to the franchise that with a story that was even darker, and introduced audiences to two more of Gotham's denizens, the forgotten and mutated Oswald Cobblepot and a fractured and subservient secretary named Selina Kyle, and as fans of the sequel know they would go on to be known as Penguin and Catwoman. The continuation was gothic horror, twisted, and gruesome, but despite the controversy and critical lashing, many felt it was superior to the first, and there are a few members of Pop Jedi who would praise it as masterful.

Next week, Pop Jedi returns to the realm of Marvel heroes and films with an episode dedicated to Black Widow!

Batman Returns has always been a mixed bag for me. While it's not great, there's some things I enjoy in it, but I'm always left with mixed feeling.

Even though Danny Devito's Penguin is completely inaccurate, I do enjoy his hammy ott performance.
Keaton is ok with what little he's given to do, although that scene where he rips off the rubbery cowl makes me cringe everytime, as does the the Bat-scratch of the cd.
Michelle Pfeiffer is overrated imo and while nice in the costume, is again ridiculous. Brought back to life by cats licking her? Wtf?

There's a LOT of goofy shit in it, some good some bad, PENGUINS WITH BOMBS STRAPPED TO THEM! But this movie totally kills the false notion that Burton's Batman was "dark". While VISUALLY dark, the movie is campy as the 60's show with some cringey sexual innuendo thrown in. While easily not the worst Bat film, it's an odd mess that's also far from the best imo.

This film ...like Keaton is so overrated. No one pays attention to the fact that Batman Returns brought in LESS money than the orginal Batman film. Batman trying to stop Peguins strapped with rockets on them is a ridiculous concept and Keaten was overshaodwed by his co-stars. This is an example of a superhero film that does not respect its audience. I was not impressed.

@Forthas - Worth noting that Returns had a stronger opening weekend than 89', but made 50mil less at the end of its run. The reputation it garnered from the negative press probably had something to do with it.

@Forthas - I didn’t hate it by any stretch of the imagination…In fact I much prefer it’s aesthetic to the first film…My issue is that Burton made Batman a supporting character to the three villains…

I remember an Entertainment Tonight feature airing before the movie released that had Tim Burton talking about how Michael Keaton performed more stunts and fighting choreography than the in the first film…Then watching opening weekend of may to find Batman having 25 minutes of screen time in the whole friggen thing…Was slightly disappointed in that for sure…

It's been a real while since I've seen, so I don't even remember it all that well. Will definitely watch both Keaton movies before The Flash though next year

Love Returns! My favorite Batman movie that isn't animated. Everything is cranked up to an 11 from 89 and I loved it. Plus you put snow in a movie, I love it automatically
