James Gunn Debunks Batman Casting Rumor While Getting Very Defensive About Clayface Criticism

James Gunn has taken to Threads to address a fairly ridiculous Batman casting rumor, while also allowing himself to get dragged into an argument about Clayface...

James Gunn said he left X (then still known as Twitter) because he was sick of getting drawn into conversations about rumors and spoilers, but the DC Studios co-CEO still can't help giving an occasional response on Threads - especially when someone really gets under his skin!

Possibly still riled up from the Frank Grillo debacle (more on that later), Gunn got very defensive when someone wrote, "Who the F*ck asked for a Clayface movie?"

"Who tf asked for Back to the Future? Casablanca? There's Something About Mary? Pan's Labyrinth? Fury Road? Weapons? The Matrix? Although it may seem like it, Hollywood isn't a place where the only way to make a movie is the public voting on what IP they want to see that they've seen countless times before. Sometimes someone – in this case initially Mike Flanagan and then James Watkins and Hossein Amini – were inspired by a relatively little known fictional character and crafted what I believe is a very special story around that character. I'd take that inspiration a thousand times over some writer trying to make a buck by writing a listless screenplay about a majorly popular character he or she has no passion or feel for."

Gunn does make a valid point, while missing another.

The movies he gives as examples (well, Fury Road was the fourth Mad Max movie... and people were asking for it) were not part of a major cinematic universe featuring some of the most iconic characters in comic book history. Clayface might well turn out to be great, but when you give the go-ahead for a solo film based on a second-tier (and we're probably being generous there) Batman villain before one of DC's premier heroes, you're going to get some pushback.

Gunn also responded to a "rumor" that sprang up on social media that The Boys star Jensen Ackles might be in line to play the DCU's Batman. Speculation arose when a fan noticed that Ackles had started following Gunn on Instagram.

"Thanks for letting me know," Gunn said. "I'm going to follow him back. I met him once 20 years ago when he was dating a friend of mine. Nice guy. We haven't cast him as anything yet."

The Superman director recently confirmed that he has completed an assembly cut of Man of Tomorrow, and is now working on his next DCU movie. Will it feature our next big-screen take on the Dark Knight, perhaps?

DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.

The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC.

Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther executive producing.

I always thought Clayface in the cartoons was dumb, but...so are most of the villians. I like the idea of this movie and I hope it does well/is good

He's right. I'm not particularly interested in Clayface personally but I HATE the "who asked for this" argument. It's so stupid.

@SATW42 - I usually do too, but in certain contexts I think it can be a fair question.

@MarkCassidy - of all the rogues in batman's gallery, almost all of them have a tragic background. So, im more than happy to see a Clayface film.

I think this could be a uniquely special CBM, like Joker was. It'll probably be well received critically and commercially successful. It's just not what your focus should be on when you're trying to establish the foundation for a 10 year cinematic universe.

Also, lots of people just aren't into body horror movies who would otherwise flock to a movie about one of those darn "majorly popular characters". So what audience are/should you be chasing?

@Super12 - I can't stomach yet another batman movie. So, im glad we are getting characters that haven't gotten as much or any exposure.

Im good with Gunn's DCU train of thought....as long as we get good content. Supergirl specifically makes me second guess whether this is even the correct approach though. Too many flops hinder what we "could have" gotten down the line.

TheVisionary25 - 10/5/2026, 10:44 AM
@BlackStar25 - you are right but while Supergirl may have flopped (and is more divisive/mixed reception wise then outright negative) , we don’t know yet how Clayface or MOT might do.

Hell , we don’t know what we’ll get down the line and whether it will be what we felt we wanted or not whether it’s either Gunn or someone else.

Everyone needs to stop looking at the forest and just look at the trees for now.

@BlackStar25 - there's been 1 flop in the dcu. The rest on MAX and Superman were successful.
BlackStar25
BlackStar25 - 10/5/2026, 1:37 PM
@lazlodaytona - Correct!...But it is important to note that Gunn himself basically promised us quality products. Supergirl was not that meaning...His judgement so far 6 out 7 projects has held true and of the 6 only 1 wasn't either written and/or directed by him(Lanterns). Meaning outside of Gunn, DCU is 1-1. That does not make me personally feel good. Looking forward to Clayface. Hope that does well. Pretty confident MoT will be awesome.

@TheVisionary25 -

"Everyone needs to stop looking at the forest and just look at the trees for now."

Well that going to be tough considering Marvel setup a pretty good blueprint and DC setup a pretty bad one previously. If most of your audiences are initially looking for a forest...you won't quail them with trees they never really cared for. Every bad tree also lessens the excitement for an eventual Forest as well.

@BlackStar25 - I guess but I would rather look at we know is in front of us because we have no idea what’s coming beyond right now and even if we did , that can still be subject to change.

He's right. I never understood the "nobody asked for this" complaint. Nobody asks for anything other than sequels. We should rejoice originality. Well unless it hails from Sony and involves Spiderman villains
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/5/2026, 10:55 AM
@Vigor - agreed

Also some people may have asked for another Mad Max film but did they ask for Fury Road specifically?.

I doubt that.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/5/2026, 10:41 AM
I agree with him completely…

Fans or the GA shouldn’t be telling creatives what to do or what not to do because thats not our job , Our job is to be the consumer and watch a product and hopefully connect to it emotionally or not & then discuss , critique and even praise what we liked or didn’t in the hopes of things being improved upon in the future but we shouldn’t be dictating what gets made or not because that’s idiotic and anti-art imo.

We as fans have become so entitled that we think we are owed shit and we aren’t , I’m sorry about the newsflash but no we aren’t because while we may spend money to watch these things , that’s on us because we made the decision to do so and not on the creatives & such who made something in the hopes that what they like & think is cool makes others feel the same aswell.

People can say whatever they want about the DCU right now , whether they are liking it or not (i am enjoying it personally for the most part) but I can tell you that some of the shit I hear about people’s ideas is worse then what we have gotten so far!!.

Unfortunately I think Clayface will bomb, but there's hope that if it's critically successful it will gain life on the streamers, which may get people more interested when Gunn starts to focus on the batfamily/Rogues.

I could be wrong though as there's not much in the way of competition outside of Street fighter and Godzilla.. domestically I might make something.

Also im glad he quit twitter. He should also quit threads and just quit speaking publicly like that and let the work speak for itself. I think he's slowly learning how to be a bettrr CEO...finally.
SenorTwats
SenorTwats - 10/5/2026, 10:53 AM
@UnderBelly - i highly doubt clayface will bomb. DCU core fanboy audience has to pull in more than 80 mill. If they're worth less than that then thats embarrassing
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 10/5/2026, 11:11 AM
@SenorTwats - ok, maybe bomb is a bit strong. Maybe under perform...but i suppose it is R rated, so their hopeful expected intake might be alot lower than I initially thought.

SenorTwats - 10/5/2026, 11:18 AM
@UnderBelly - even supergirl money would be good for Clayface based on its budget. Unless it goes completely under the radar I think it may clear like 100 mill

The “who asked for this” argument is pathetic in general.
I don’t like Gunn’s approach to DC, but he’s very right in this regard.

However, it IS weird that the trinity wasn’t prioritised before a solo Clayface movie, lol. I’m not complaining though.. Not in a million years did I think a Clayface movie would look a million times better than a Superman movie, but here we are.
