Matt Reeves And James Gunn Explain The Batman Part II Director Change: "I Am Not Leaving [The Movie]"

Matt Reeves and James Gunn have addressed speculation about the filmmaker's future on The Batman Part II after Steven Soderbergh stepped in to finish shooting the Elseworlds sequel.

Yesterday evening, the news broke that Steven Soderbergh will direct the remainder of The Batman Part II. While it initially sounded like a relatively small task for the Ocean's Eleven filmmaker, we've since learned that Matt Reeves shot only around two-thirds of the sequel before stepping away due to an undisclosed family matter.

It's unclear why production couldn't be paused until Reeves was ready to return, though it may be as simple as changing the cast's schedules and filming locations being too costly or impractical.

While Soderbergh shoots The Batman Part II in London, Reeves is expected to have input from his home in Los Angeles and should take charge of the sequel again for the post-production process.

Now, Reeves has taken to social media to issue a brief statement on where things stand with the movie. "Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes."

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn also felt the need to clarify matters, writing on Threads, "Matt is still the director of The Batman 2 and always will be. I can't express how profoundly grateful and moved we are by Steven's offer to help him complete his vision."

Responding to a fan, Gunn later added, "Like I said above Matt is still the director, he doesn't need to be 'back.' He's still here."

With no specific explanation given for Reeves' absence from the remainder of filming (not that he owes it to anyone, given that this is clearly a deeply personal matter), social media has been flooded with comparisons to what happened with Justice League in 2017.

However, this additional clarity from Reeves and Gunn is clearly meant to put an end to social media chatter about him being removed from the movie like Zack Snyder was when Warner Bros. replaced him with Joss Whedon.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script by him and Mattson Tomlin, The Batman Part II stars Robert Pattinson, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, Charles Dance, Jayme Lawson, Gil Perez-Abraham, Sebastian Koch, and Brian Tyree Henry.

The Batman Part II is set to be released in theaters on February 18, 2028.

This is just my own speculation, but the fact Matt’s still going to be actively involved, but can’t be shooting on location, really makes me think an immediate family member is seriously unwell, and not Matt. This is the best outcome for everyone, but I hope the film doesn’t suffer from anything from this other than pure bad luck.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - I dunno tho. If you remember, his situation prevented him from working on the script and he didn't have to travel for that. He wants time off he doesn't want to be on the phone all the time. His involvement in the production and the post-production will be minimal to non-existent unfortunately.

@ObserverIO - They already announced that Reeves will be the only one working on the movie's post-production.

@TheJok3r - What they say and what actually happens may be two different things. Practically speaking, he will most likely be too pre-occupied with whatever family issues are taking all of his attention atm. These issues have been going on for a few years now, they may continue to go on for a few years longer.

With James Gunn's history I just hope they're both telling the truth.

I remember when WB said Zack snyder chose Joss whedon to take over JL and that was a big F*king lie.

@SenorTwats - This ^

You can add the David Ayer situation to this. When it was reported that he was doing loads of reshoots, his WB glaze was off the charts, stating there was nothing to worry about.

SenorTwats - 10/16/2026, 7:24 AM
@CyberNigerian - i cant trust them at all bro. They happily pay directors to glaze them to trick us into thinking everything is fine and once they have our money the truth comes out.

I even remember the extended cut of SS which was just more bs lmao

@SenorTwats - Reeves is quite literally saying it out of his own mouth. Two different situations

@SenorTwats - I also love how DC Studios' James Gunn said that they would always wait for a script and filmmaker to be ready instead of rushing projects into production.

We could have had Mike Flanagan's Clayface, but instead next week we get a film by someone who they replaced him with and a rewritten script.

Yeah at first it seemed off and the more I read the OG article, the more it seems it is not the same situation with Zack Snyder. The director isn't coming in to re-write and rechop everything. He's literally the equivalent of a substitute teacher.

So...that's fine. Hope everything goes well with Reeves and he gets through this difficult time. This shit must be really brutal for him.

Steven Soderberg's involvement is good news, whatever the capacity. He's the perfect blend of journeyman and auteur to make something like this feel seamless.

MotherGooseUPus - 10/16/2026, 7:42 AM
I hope we still get to see Matt's vision for Part II. Ive been looking forward to seeing this movie since it was announced. It seems Matt and Steven are "friends" or at least are on the same terms in what Matt wants the movie to look/feel like so thats a plus. I hope whatever Reeves is dealing with at home, that things work out for him and his family.

@MotherGooseUPus - Same. I didn't see The Batman in theaters but when i watched it home many months after it dropped, i enjoyed it and have watched it at least 4 times. It really grew on me and I'm hype for this sequel no matter how long it takes to be done right.

ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 10/16/2026, 12:57 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - It's bad news but that's the news. And that hurts the bottom line so DC Studios is currently working overtime to tell us the opposite of that news.

I'm not worried. If theories are correct that Matt will be back to edit the movie, hopefully he can be involved in a hands-on way for reshoots that will be needed.

Just kill this film already. The whole situation has gotten ridiculous and The Batman 1 was mediocre at best.

And you're foolish if you don't think this falls in line with the JL and SS situations. Look at the track record! Everyone lies all the time! Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me 3 times (which is exactly where we currently are)?! .....
You get the point.

I wonder if there was a stipulation in Matt’s contract from WB or now skydance that’s forcing him to bring in a director to finish the project timely, so Matt asks his friend for help. At the end of the day these are businesses and films are products that cost millions of dollars. It’s kind of a big deal when you are wasting someone else’s money.
