The Batman Part II Finds New Director In Steven Soderbergh As Matt Reeves Steps Away

The Batman Part II has turned to filmmaker Steven Soderbergh to finish shooting the highly anticipated sequel due to Matt Reeves' ongoing family matter. Here's what you need to know.

Following the news that filming had been halted on The Batman Part II while filmmaker Matt Reeves took some time to deal with a "family matter," it's now been confirmed that he will not finish shooting the movie.

Some second unit work continued after production was paused, but Ocean's Eleven, Magic Mike, and Black Bag director Steven Soderbergh has officially joined the sequel to finish principal photography. It's believed that Reeves will return to the director's chair for post-production ahead of the movie's planned 2028 release.

With well over a year until The Batman Part II arrives in theaters, why is a new director necessary? Well, with a film as big as this, schedules and shooting locations are hard to change, and if Reeves needs a lot of time away, then this may have been the only way to finish the movie.

"I thought Matt Reeves' work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent," Soderbergh said in a statement. "The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what's already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film."

DC Studios added, "As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt's work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2. Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film."

There's still no word on what issue Reeves is dealing with. However, this feels like a very different situation than when the death of Zack Snyder's daughter saw Warner Bros. take that opportunity to replace him with Joss Whedon as Justice League's director.

According to Deadline, "Although Reeves is unable to be on set, the two will work together and remain in communication until filming has ended, with Reeves taking over post-production duties when he is ready to return." It's unclear whether Soderbergh will get a directing credit on the film, but it sounds like his priority was to help a fellow filmmaker.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script by him and Mattson Tomlin, The Batman Part II stars Robert Pattinson, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, Charles Dance, Jayme Lawson, Gil Perez-Abraham, Sebastian Koch, and Brian Tyree Henry.

The Batman Part II is set to be released in theaters on February 18, 2028.

Not my first choice, but he’s a competent director and if this meets Reeves’s intention and keeps the crew from facing unemployment, then lets go.

@Madman - As long it was the first choice for Reeves then that is all that matters.

@Madman - i mean for a fake family issue is good ..we all know Reeves is bogus

@Truebeliever333 - Variety made it sound like Soderbergh and Reeves made the arrangement then took it to Gunn who approved it. Also sounds like Reeves gets to do all the post work himself. It’s essentially Soderbergh just stepping in to get the shots Reeves wanted and Reeves will do the rest…Or so it seems.

@Malatrova15 - what is your deal? Reeves is probably dealing with a family member who has cancer or something. Have a little respect and dignity FFS

@vegetaray - Best case then from the sound of it. Someone Reeves wants and Reeves still has control of his own movie. But, he can focus on his family for now.

@vegetaray - Yeah, and Snyder's was well publicized, and look how that turned out. I have questions, but in this case it's his choice so...I'm good with it. Honestly, I want this to be done so we can move on to the DCU version for better or worse. Hollywood loves trilogies though, so I wonder.

@Magneto - I think the prospect of a trilogy is essentially over for this incarnation of Batman…Whatever happens with Reeves, good or bad, we all obviously hope it’s good; this is probably going to be the end of it.

@0bstreperous - no doubt. Not sure if thats a good thing consider Green Lantern was hot garbage but then again, this Batman isnt any special in comparison to the comicbook character so whatever. Next one to bat I guess.

@FireGunn - Why is it that Everytime people have something against the DCU, you guys always say rebnot both the DCU and MCU. And when it's the MCU, you only ever say reboot the MCU😂
FireGunn

@ComicBandit - No idea what you're talking about. I've always said reboot the MCU and DCU because both should be rebooted. I'm not biased

@FireGunn - don't you read comics? Sine of the best stories ever written were from dense continuities that went on and on. But rebooting endlessly was met with malaise and confusion.

@Hobmoblin - The Silver Age DC reboot was insanely popular as was the post-Crisis reboot. And The New 52 was divisive but successful , commercially. Then there's the wildly popular Absolute and Ultimate reboots. Some of the best stories like John Byrne's Man of Steel, Frank Miller's Batman: Year One and Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man come out of reboots.

Soderbergh is an interesting choice. I don’t think I’ve seen a great film from him but haven’t seen a bad one from him either.

@Lucasberg

Ocean’s 11 and Out of Sight are damn near perfect movies for me.

Black Bag from last year also ripped imo.

Lucasberg

Honestly I’m happy with the choice.

cincymovieguy
cincymovieguy - 10/15/2026, 7:40 PM
@Truebeliever333 m

He’s going to finish the movie as reeves intended. Reeves won’t be on set but they’ll be communicating and the movie is already storyboarded out.

This isn’t a Snyder/Whedon scenario where they’re reworking the whole movie.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/15/2026, 7:44 PM

McMurdo
McMurdo - 10/16/2026, 12:26 AM
@Lucasberg - definitely not an exciting choice but it sounds like theyre hoping he can just ape Reeves and Reeves basically just rips Fincher, so. Who knows maybe it turns out fine but almost certainly just "fine"
