Sebastian Stan is doing the press rounds to promote his new film, Fjord, while also fielding inevitable questions about his mysterious role in Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel.
The Avengers: Doomsday star wasn't about to reveal too much, but did speak about working with former MCU co-star Scarlett Johansson and making the jump from Marvel to DC during an interview with ET.
"It’s pretty wild. Yeah," he says in the video below. "I thought I knew something about the comic book world. Turns out I didn’t."
In a separate interview with Variety, Stan explained how he ended up being cast in The Batman - Part II.
"Two things happened at the same time. I got a call to go meet Matt Reeves, who had seen The Apprentice and loved it and said, 'I want to talk to you about this new movie.' And at the same time, I’d reached out to James Gunn and said, 'Listen, man, I’m just letting you know — I’m here, I’m alive and well, I’m ready to rock.' And then it happened. I still feel like sometimes I’m like, did I leave the team for the other team? These worlds keep going parallel, and weirdly they help each other."
Harvey Dent was brought up, but Stan avoided talking about his character directly by teasing the scope and scale of the long-awaited sequel.
"Look, there’s no way to keep any secret anymore. What I’ll say is this: there’s no way people will fully grasp how this movie is until they see it. I go to set sometimes and I look around and I’m like, I think we’re making [frick]ing The Godfather Part Two. I feel that highly about it. Matt has spent three years working on it. There’s a lot of speculation about these roles, about what this movie is, but I think it’s going to be a good payoff — it’s really grounded and real, and that’s what I loved about it. You want to tease it a little, but we still have a long time."
When Stan's casting was announced, the trades indicated that he would play Dent/Two-Face, but this was never confirmed, and rumors later circulated that he'd actually been cast as deranged serial killer Victor Zsasz. For what it's worth, Jeff Sneider remains adamant that Stan is playing this twisted villain and not Gotham City's DA.
Whichever character he's playing, Stan is now being much more careful when discussing the movie and his role.
When asked whether he'd be undergoing a "transformation" for the sequel during a recent interview with Allocine, he replied: "There are always transformations, external or internal, when you play a character."
In a previous interview with Deadline, the Thunderbolts* actor said that he will play “many roles in this one," which was taken as a pretty big hint that he will portray Dent and his villainous alter-ego.
As for Scarlett Johansson, there are rumors that she will play a version of Poison Ivy. A blonde woman many believe to be the actress' stunt double was recently spotted riding shotgun in the Batmobile.
Filming continues on The Batman 2 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Earlier this year, Reeves officially announced the movie's main cast on social media.
The filmmaker confirmed that Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth), Colin Farrell (Oz Cobb/The Penguin), Jayme Lawson (Bella Réal) and Gil Perez-Abraham (Officer Martinez) will reprise their roles, alongside new cast members Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch and Brian Tyree Henry.
Reeves did not reveal the characters Gotham City's new additions will play.
After several previous delays, The Batman - Part II was scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 1, 2027, but was recently pushed back to February 18, 2028.
