Matt Reeves Re-ups Warner Bros. TV Deal, Leading To Renewed Hopes For The Penguin Season 2

With The Batman Part II director Matt Reeves re-upping his deal with Warner Bros. TV, DC Comics fans are hoping this will lead to another season of The Penguin or a different series in that world.

The Batman Part II arrives in theaters in 2028, and while The Penguin has helped bridge the gap between 2022's The Batman and its sequel, it's still an agonising wait for fans of the Caped Crusader.

Throw in the uncertainty surrounding DC Studios' plans for Batman, and the situation becomes even more fraught. Will The Brave and the Bold lead to Reeves being forced to halt plans for Part III? And are we ever going to get The Penguin Season 2 or another small-screen spin-off?

Warner Bros. Television Chairperson Channing Dungey has told Variety that Matt Reeves and his 6th & Idaho production company (which was responsible for The Penguin) have re-upped their overall deal with Warner Bros. TV.

The agreement has been in place since 2020, and as you might expect, fans are hoping it will lead to more stories set in the world of Reeves' Batman Epic Crime Saga.

Dungey says, "Matt has a true knack for getting into the psyche of his characters, and he and his team have delivered some of the most compelling, thought-provoking stories over the years."

Greg Berlanti, Bill Lawrence, Chuck Lorre, Mindy Kaling, Lucia Aniello/Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky are among the other creatives with similar deals, so we'll now have to wait and see what Reeves has in store for us.

While The Penguin works as a limited series, we know Gotham City's new Kingpin will only have a few scenes in The Batman Part II. With that in mind, there's still plenty of places for his story to go in a potential Season 2.

Last year, Dungey said, "The Penguin is one of those things where — and it’s interesting, because when you talk with everyone involved, everyone is interested in possibly revisiting those characters and doing more — it was very much designed as a limited series. But I would never say never."

"I think if we can get the creative stars to line up in the right way, and the talent is available — because we certainly wouldn’t want to do this without Colin [Farrell] and Cristin [Milioti] and that team — I would say it’s definitely a possibility, but there’s nothing in the works at the moment," she added.

The Penguin's cast includes Colin Farrell (Oz Cobblepot), Cristin Milioti (Sofia Falcone), Rhenzy Feliz (Victor Aguilar), Michael Kelly (Johnny Viti), Shohreh Aghdashloo (Nadia Maroni), Deirdre O’Connell (Francis Cobb), Clancy Brown (Salvatore Maroni), James Madio (Milos Grapa), Scott Cohen (Luca Falcone), Michael Zegen (Alberto Falcone), Carmen Ejogo (Eve Karlo), and Theo Rossi (Dr. Julian Rush).

All episodes of the series are now streaming on HBO Max.

Due to poorly understood transmutative properties, the bottom third of your theater seat is nothing but gum and boogers.

Not sure if I’d want to see more Falcone stuff. I think a threat would probably work better. Although a greater feeling that Batman is always around the corner would probably be the most appreciated thing.

@Cass - idk if Sofia should be involved as much as I liked the character…

Have it be a new crime boss encroaching on Oz’s territory and him having to deal with that with the former being Black Mask perhaps?.

As long as they maintain a grounded approach to these shows I am in. But what a sad state of affairs that DC put themselves in. Had they embraced the grounded and character driven approach to these films and shows they would be buying studios rather than being the target of a takeover every three years or so. Grounded films and TV shows are 8 wins and 0 losses for Warner Brothers. But for some reason they chose to appeal to the most irrelevant part of the fan base trying to add more "color" and slapstick comedy and kept losing money and embarrassing the brand all the while. Hopefully after the failure of their latest hiring mistake James Gunn then they will make more films in the vein of the Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel, Joker, Penguin and now Lanterns.

Funny how some creatives are getting long term extensions or signing new deals at Warner Brothers and others are not.

@Forthas - according to rumours, Gunn and Safran got extended before Reeves.

Who are you referring to?

@UltimaRex - That extension ends next year! Nothing since. They are toast!!!!

@Forthas - or 2031.

I wonder who's right. Considering both Zaslav and Ellison have both come out in support of Gunn.

...

You think?

See you in 2036.

A Gotham City Sirens show with Milioti, Kravitz and a new take on Harley Quinn would be a special treat.

Great series. Didn't like the Batman movie which is ironic. My fear is they won't be able to do as good a story that is original enough in the follow up.

I personally don't think we're getting another Penguin series, simply because I don't think he makes it out of Part II alive. With that said, they can still make a Catwoman series that ties Part II to Part III and resolves the Sofia plot point. There could be some other plot point in the next movie we're not aware of that could get expanded upon in a mini series as well; they definitely have options beyond limiting themselves to Penguin.

Genuinely make an Officer Martinez show with the woman who was the showrunner for Penguin.

Spotlight lesser known GCPD characters; Slam Bradley, Jim Corrigan. Have Maroni or Thorne try to blackmail Martinez into getting on the payroll. Have Batman show up occasionally. Use some villains that Reeves has no plans for; Pyg, Shiva, Killer Moth.

And most importantly, make it an actual season of television with 22 episodes a year.

That’s cool…

Hopefully this means we get more Batman:Caped Crusader atleast since I enjoy that show & am fine with no more Penguin tbh even though i liked that series quite a bit.

If there’s any Reevesverse spinoff I want , it’s Catwoman right now so i hope that happens with Sofia Falcone in that…

We’ll see come The Batman Part 2 if there’s any other stories out of that i want to see in this world or not!!.
