The Flash Star Ezra Miller Has A Blunt Response When Asked About A Potential DCU Sequel

Ezra Miller played the Scarlet Speedster in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and The Flash, but what of The Flash 2? The actor's response to that is predictably brief.

The Flash could have been a great comic book movie. After Zack Snyder introduced the DCEU's Scarlet Speedster, filmmaker Andy Muschietti set out to put the hero back on track by pairing Barry Allen up with Michael Keaton's iconic Batman.

Unfortunately, the movie didn't work. Whether it was Ezra Miller's personal issues overshadowing the character, his zany performance/s, or a lot of bad CGI, The Flash failed to strike a chord with audiences. Even after decent, albeit mixed, reviews, it flopped with $271 million worldwide.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn heaped praise on the 2023 movie and later tapped Muschietti to helm the long-delayed The Brave and the Bold (a movie the director may or may not remain attached to in the DCU). However, even he seemed to realise the writing was on the wall for Miller, as the reshoots he oversaw left Barry stranded in an alternate timeline with George Clooney's Batman.

Miller hasn't starred in anything since The Flash was released over three years ago, and his career appears to have been completely derailed amid some pretty bizarre controversies.

During a recent interaction with a fan, the Justice League star was asked when The Flash 2 is happening and replied, "God only knows," before laughing and walking away. Needless to say, Miller clearly doesn't anticipate being asked to reprise the role.

While The Flash's many problems overshadowed the movie, there was a lot that did work. Sasha Calle's Supergirl, Muschietti's approach to Batman, and the portrayal of the Fastest Man Alive's powers were high points that, ultimately, were largely forgotten when edited clips of the hero putting a baby into a microwave oven went viral.

DC Studios has seemingly decided to shelve The Flash, and it's unclear when or where we'll see a new take on Barry Allen (or perhaps even Wally West). The People vs. Gorilla Grodd is a possibility, but it doesn't seem to be the plan right now unless Gunn has a huge surprise planned.

"A lot of people did not see it. But you know how things are these days, like people don’t see things, but they like to talk s*** about it, and they like to jump on bandwagons," Muschietti said last year. "They don’t really know. People are angry for reasons that are unrelated to these things. Of course, we had a publicity crisis with Ezra that is undeniable. And I’m not questioning that."

He continued, "But yeah, we love the movie. And actually, we really recommend it. This may seem immaterial now, but we also had so much support from the studio, really, at a point where they could have been like, you know, backing out because of all the issues we were having with publicity. And they went all in, and we all went all in."

You can see Miller's response to that question about The Flash 2 in the player below.

He was a total miscast. A few of Snyder's picks were. The guy was either burnin' hot or stone cold with his casting choices. This one was stone cold.

@TheStranger - That’s exactly right. Cavill, Gadot and Affleck were all on point. Miller and Eisenberg were horribly miscast and this was true even before Miller went off the rails.

@TheStranger - Agreed. My unasked for rankings of Snyder's casting:

A+: Ben Affleck, Jeremy Irons, Michael Shannon
A: Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Joe Manganiello, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, JK Simmons
B: Ray Fisher, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne
C: Jason Momoa
D: Ezra Miller, Jesse Eisenberg
F: Jared Leto (David Ayer's casting but needed to find the floor here)

@TheStranger - Everyone was a miscast. Flash too flamboyant. Cyborg, Superman, & Wonder Woman are terrible actors. Mamoa has no charisma and Ben quit acting halfway, regeting his decision, and it shows.

DCEU has one of the worst franchise miscast in general next to Transformers. Only good casting was Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Michael Shannon as Zod, and maybe Margot Robbie's HQ but even her performance was gimmicky and one note. Her HQ felt like a Deadpool that only works half the time she's on screen.

@TheStranger - Christopher Reeve. I like Superman 2025, but it wasn’t great. If David Corenswet gets the right movie, he could rank pretty high with me.

TheStranger - 9/22/2026, 7:10 PM
@RolandD - That's fair, I'm guilty of liking Cavill a lot, but I'm not a Superman guy. Just a normie enjoyer when it comes to him. I much prefer Batman and (obviously) Phantom Stranger (when the world deigns to give him love lol).
RolandD
RolandD - 9/22/2026, 8:54 PM
@TheStranger - I thought Kyle got the shaft because he was never featured in a Superman movie that got him, they got the character right. As bad as the theatrical release of Justice League was, once he joined them in the fight against Steppenwolf I saw glimpses of what Superman should be in the movies. I was ready for him to continue on the role but it wasn’t meant to be and I think Corenswet seemed more like the character in the movies he’s been in so far. Well I like the movie I do agree that he got kicked around too much in it. Now I’ve got a question for you. After reading your comment I got to wondering if the Phantom sStranger has ever been in live action. I did not watch Swamp Thing and wonder what you think about how he was portrayed there. What did you think of it?
TheStranger
TheStranger - 9/23/2026, 5:39 PM
@RolandD - Agree with 100% of everything you said about Superman. Exactly how I felt too. Cavill just really needed a brighter suit (which perhaps might've been a thing after his Black Adam cameo) and a better script. I've come to the conclusion that Snyder is a good director that can't write. So perhaps with someone else doing a script about a brighter Superman, Snyder could've done even better than MOS.

Honestly, I didn't watch it either. I just watched a few clips of Stranger being in the show and it disappointed me on such a deep level. My reaction was "Is that seriously the best you can do?" /gordan-ramsey

As far as recently, I think the New 52 Phantom Stranger was kinda neat. I'd prefer a mysterious origin, but if you have to give him one, making him Judas, who has to work off his sin debt for his betrayal, was actually pretty awesome and unique. I mean...I'm under no delusions that we ever get a Phantom Stranger movie out of Hollywood. However, he's the ultimate cameo character. Like DC's Nick Fury, he can be in literally any movie. Guiding the heroes of the universe to make better choices and do right. Just a white haired guy in a blue business suit and cape. It's not a high-dollar character portrayal. Such a shame...

@TheStranger - I was disappointed with how he looked and almost said so but I figured, you’re a bigger fan than I am so I would let you speak first. He looked nothing like the character and since I understand, they did such a good thing with Swamp Thing I’m surprised they did that with the Phantom Stranger, who is a very visually cool character.
TheStranger
TheStranger - 9/24/2026, 4:35 PM
@RolandD - Nope you were correct, he was a total disappointment. 😂 Ezra Miller level disrespect, but at least Ezra had a decent costume. No respect at all, my friend! lol
RolandD
RolandD - 9/24/2026, 7:00 PM
@TheStranger - It’s definitely disappointing. He’s also a comic book character that would be very easy to get the look right if one had a mind to do so. Get a competent tall actor ideally with white hair and the costume would be very easy to put together and be authentic. He really wouldn’t even need to have a superhero build but the actor that played in was clearly overweight and that doesn’t look right.
TheStranger
TheStranger - 9/25/2026, 1:04 AM
@RolandD - Agreed, I've heard a few people suggest Liam Neeson. As you said though, easy to do. I'd go with either Hugh Laurie or Mark Strong. Ideally Hugh Laurie.

I wasn’t excited when Ezra was cast as Barry. Wally, I would have probably would have preferred. But still, he was fine and had funny moments. But after the news came out of him being batshit crazy? That’s when my stock fell for him.

That said, I really enjoyed Flash for what it was. Mind you, that movie when through like fifteen rewrites, three different directors, and a crap ton of edits. And it came out fine. Not the best movie in the world but fun for what it was.

If anything I applaud The director for making that crap storm of a movie into soemthing watchable and fun. If he had it from the very beginning and no Ezra crap? It would have been better received and probably be part of the DCU.

TheVisionary25 - 9/16/2026, 5:09 PM
@Mrnorth1921 - yeah

Part of the reason I defend Muschietti for Batman is because they had change a fair amount of stuff given they knew the DCEU was ending and soon there would be somewhat of a reboot hence why the ending got rewritten & reshot a few times etc.

That’s not even mentioning the Ezra baggage so I feel he could do better if he didn’t have all that (granted , I liked his first IT but the sequel not so much so he’s 50/50 for me when it comes to his films since I haven’t seen Flash in its entirety either).

Mrnorth1921 - 9/16/2026, 6:54 PM
@TheVisionary25 - yeah, had the stars aligned, I feel Muschietti would have delivered a far better movie than what we were given.

And I want to see his Batman. Poor guy, probably has everything planned and waiting, but Reeves is taking forever for “his” Batman movies. I like the Batman, but If I had a choice? I’d rather have comic accurate Batman in a cinematic universe than another grounded, dreary Batman movie.

And as for IT, I blame that most on the source material. The kid stuff has always been the highlight of the book. He can only do so much with the latter half.

But his welcome to Derry shows are amazing. So, I have faith.

Some people be real idiots or just intentionally be trying to start shit because why would you ask him that since you likely know or have seen the new Superman thus can assume that they are rebooting?.

Anyway , I genuinely thought Ezra’s version of Barry was fine for the most part but I’m glad he’s no longer playing the role tbh…

If we do get a Barry Allen in the DCU then Lewis Pullman would be my pick!!.
