The Flash Star Grant Gustin Would "Love" To Play Barry Allen Again — But Could It Happen In The DCU?

The Flash star Grant Gustin has reiterated his interest in playing the Fastest Man Alive again, but will DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn finally give in to the demand and bring the actor into the DCU?

The Flash wrapped up its nine-season run on The CW in 2023. The network was eager to move away from pricey scripted dramas, meaning the Arrowverse TV shows fell one by one.

Fortunately, the Scarlet Speedster's series got a proper ending after Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow were unceremoniously cancelled (Gotham Knight was also scrapped, though few mourned that one).

Grant Gustin did an excellent job as Barry Allen in the eyes of most fans, and the positive aspects of his performance shone even brighter after whatever it was Ezra Miller did in The Flash movie in 2023.

Two years ago, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn said that he and Peter Safran are "holding a beat on development" when it comes to a new movie featuring the Fastest Man Alive. We don't know what that means for Barry Allen, but there's a good chance that Wally West will be the DCU's Flash, similar to John Stewart taking Hal Jordan's place.

During an appearance at New York Comic Con, Gustin reiterated that he "would love to play The Flash again" if the opportunity were to present itself. For what it's worth, the Arrowverse alum has previously confirmed that he's spoken to DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn...but not about Barry.

"We've never talked about Flash," the actor confirmed in 2024. "We've talked, just like, I'm a huge Superman fan. I've always been a Superman fan, since I was a kid. So, I'm just really excited about the movie. And I'm excited about David [Corenswet]'s casting."

He added, "I'm excited to see what James Gunn does with it. So, I think at one point - maybe a couple of different times, we've DM'd about Superman. We've literally never talked Flash. I'm just excited he's doing Superman."

Gunn, meanwhile, has been largely dismissive when fans have called for Gustin's return. "I keep being told people are going to riot over things but I am as of yet to see a riot. Love Grant by the way," he said back in January.

@UltimaRex - The show was awful but he was great in the role. He’s have to be a variant or it wouldn’t make any sense though

They have a MULTIVERSE. They can bring in any past DC actor they want.

It's a good idea, so no, they won't do it. Flash will wind up being referenced by the shadow of a marionette in a cartoon that is a commercial for cocoa puffs before anything else happens

Boy, the way our heroes flew,
Worlds collided, old and new,
Every week, there was something new,
Those were the days.

And we knew our heroes then,
Oliver, Barry, Super-friends,
Legends crossed through time again,
Wish they'd come back again.

Didn't need a perfect show,
Watched our heroes learn and grow,
Every crossover stole the show,
Those were the days.

The Flash CW show had its ups & downs , i also don’t think it ever reached the level of S1 and even S2 to an extent again (came close a couple of times atleast imo to the latter then the former)…

However Grant always did well as Barry Allen and even at times elevated the material he was given so to me he is easily the best live action Flash we have gotten but I wouldn’t want him back in the role for the DCU , same with JWS as Jay Garrick as good as he was aswell.

I just think it’s time for these characters to have new blood so i hope we do get that moving forward even if Wally West ends up being the main Flash in Gunn & Safran’s universe!!.

Sheldon Cooper was the best gay Flash.

Gustin will always be the best Flash, IMO.

Unfortunately Gunn will never cast him. He's too old for the Gunnverse.

@knomad - like Kyle Chandler?

(Not an invitation to kill off. Hal comes back, Barry... not so much.)

He was great as Barry even if the show quality fell off near the later seasons so im all for him playing Barry again. Becuz of this, he will Never get to be Barry in the DCU, which, isnt a bad thing as the DCU is going nowhere fast.......

For some reason, the Barry Allen played by Grant Gustin now lives in the universe of Gunn's Superman. He keeps a low profile, pretending to be an ordinary citizen without using his powers.

The moment Barry uses his powers, he will attract the attention of the Black Flash, which is hunting him. Barry is a fugitive being pursued for breaking the rules governing speedsters and the multiverse.
