The Flash Movie Writers Reveal Their Scrapped Version Featured A Very Different Bruce Wayne/Batman

2023's The Flash movie could have looked very different, with John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein revealing their scrapped version featured a Bruce Wayne who never became Batman.

There were multiple iterations of The Flash before the version we saw in 2023 raced into theaters. Even the movie that was released changed significantly, with new DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn stepping in to change the ending, removing several characters and adding George Clooney.

Mayday and Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves filmmakers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were among those who took a crack at the Fastest Man Alive.

Ultimately, Christina Hodson reworked their script and the duo ended up with a story credit. In an interview with The Playlist, Daley and Goldstein finally revealed what their version of The Flash looked like, confirming it had little in common with Andy Muschietti's take.

"An element of [Barry Allen] and his slightly younger self embarking on the journey together," Daley said of what survived from their take. "Everything else was kind of different. We had a version where Bruce Wayne never became Batman."

"And so he was just this sort of billionaire party boy who’s aimless and doesn’t know what to do with his life. And we love the idea of sort of thrusting him into a hero position. That is not in the film," he continued. "They made it Michael Keaton’s Batman. So not a lot survived."

Had The Flash followed the comics, Thomas Wayne would have been the Flashpoint Batman. We believe that was considered at one point, but the movie ultimately morphed into a soft reboot for the DCEU.

Before DC Studios was formed, the idea had been to switch out Henry Cavill's Superman for Sasha Calle's Supergirl. Michael Keaton's Batman, meanwhile, was going to take over from Ben Affleck, with that Dark Knight then taking centre stage in Batgirl and Batman Beyond.

Eventually, we'd have had Crisis on Infinite Earths, though Cavill's unexpected return in Black Adam saw him added to The Flash. Gunn wanted none of this baggage for the new DCU, so that all changed.

Spider-Verse architects Phil Lord and Chris Miller also had an idea for The Flash, and the latter previously said they had "a very elaborate treatment that we really like." Lord confirmed it was "pretty different" from what ended up racing into theaters in 2023, noting, "It's a good idea that I am afraid to not be able to use someday," declining to share any specific plot details.

Even after decent, albeit mixed, reviews, The Flash flopped with $271 million worldwide. Gunn, meanwhile, hailed it as "probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made."

writers? more than one was responsible for this?

@grif - There was a record amount of writers on The Flash. Apparently it was a ridiculous amount like 75 of them and there was a decision made by the WGA to only credit the writers of the final pass of the story and screenplay because there would be too many credits and it'd be stupid.

These included big names like Grant Morrison, Robert Zemeckis, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller among dozens of others.

I still think Tim Burton and Michael Keaton teaming up again and doing Batman Beyond would be incredible!

@Questar - I would've preferred to see a 3rd Keaton solo movie directed by Burton over what we got in the Flash; they should've stuck to Snyder's plan of having Thomas Wayne's Batman instead. Jeffrey Dean Morgan would've been incredible in the role.

[frick] YOU, we are NOT doing this again!!! For decades... literally DECADES... we BEGGED them to bring Keaton back as old man Bruce for a Batman Beyond project. Then FINALLY, after all those years of pain and suffering warring in comment sections and message boards, DC and WB finally caved and decided to do the work and pay the man enough, and we actually got Keaton back as old man Bruce...... For a CRINGEFEST of a Flash film that was the last sloppy diarrhea shit the DCEU released before dying.

I will never ever ever EVER forgive DC and WB for that. And I will never forgive you for reminding me of it right now....

@Questar - I love where your head's at but Batman Beyond is so not Burton's speed or aesthetic. Maybe Villeneuve.

@TheAmericanHero - hahaha sorry bro I do get it was traumatic! What a wasted golden opportunity! I don’t know a company has ever botched an easy win that badly.

Questar - 9/6/2026, 11:33 AM
@ObserverIO - that’s a fair point! I agree I don’t think his aesthetic fits what the fin should be and it’s a phenomenal pic to have Villeneuve do it he would knock that out of the park. But Keaton would absolutely crush that. But when the idea first started floating around before the Flash, that was exhilarating

Should have featured a VERY DIFFERENT Flash in casting, story (no dead mom Johns retcon), and costume, but instead we got the worst casting and portrayal in superhero movie history.

I actually quite liked The Flash, and it could've been a canon reboot into the DCU instead of the messy transition we got. I like the DCU so far though. Would love to see Lord and Miller take a stab at Flash though. Give it a couple more years and maybe the audience will be ready for another run at it.

@Why - A Lord & Miller Flash film would be the dream..

Also while it has been a somewhat rough transition and the growing pains seem to still be around unfortunately , I have liked the DCU aswell so far especially when it comes to variety in that a Lanterns does not feel like Superman which doesn’t feel like Creature Commandos imo.

Why - 9/2/2026, 3:57 PM
@TheVisionary25 - really enjoying Lanterns so far and the tonal differences between that and Superman/Supergirl. I know Clayface is a weird choice for a lot of people but I'm looking forward to it.

But then there was quite a few things I really did NOT like.

They should have stuck with Thomas Wayne becoming Batman and brought back Jeffrey Dean Morgan. That would have been great. Also, maybe drop the somehow goofier Barry Allen. If they went closer to the source material it would have been epic. Also, better CGI. That baby scene was so bad.

Sony/Marvel Studios should allow Lord & Miller to helm the live action introduction of Miles Morales into the MCU. I literally cannot think of Directors more suited for a comic book movie than the two of them. They've already proven they know how to handle Spidey after the "Spider-Verse" films.
Logically they'd be the best choice.

What can I say...I liked the movie...for the most part.
RolandD
RolandD - 9/2/2026, 8:04 PM
@Nomis929 - It was better than it had a right to be. I never liked Ezra Miller’s casting as Barry Allen, even pre-dating him going off the rails but he actually did a good job in his performance in that movie. I just would’ve liked to have had a Barry Allen who looks more the part and was way more confident. That even goes for the show as well. Barry shouldn’t be overconfident but he shouldn’t need to be buoyed up by all of the people around him all the time.
Nomis929
Nomis929 - 9/2/2026, 10:09 PM
@RolandD -I always thought the actor who played iris' fiance' in Flash season 1, rick Cosnet, looked more like Barry Allen than Grant Gustin.

I haven’t seen The Flash in its entirety outside of clips but it’s interesting that the idea of Barry and his slightly younger version was a Daley & Goldstein idea…

I wonder what other ideas remained of theirs since they came up with the narrative foundation even if the screenplay went in a different direction (it’s likely using Flashpoint as a basis for the movie was their idea)?.

Anyway , the idea of a aimless party boy Bruce who never became Batman but becomes a hero through the film in his own right sounds pretty interesting though I wonder if it was Ben Affleck or a different younger actor in that role…

Regardless , I would like to see Daley & Goldstein be given a shot in the future to write and direct a Flash film in the DCU since I feel their sensibilities could work well for the character and I enjoyed their previous works in Game Night & Dungeons and Dragons:Honor Among Thieves (hearing mainly positive things about Mayday aswell)!!.

Bad writing, bad movie. And sadly so much potential. I think it was limited due to the TV series using Eobard Thawn's Reverse Flash. Otherwise they could have done a far better job of that with a Flashpoint movie that included the Thomas Wayne Batman. No need to Wonder Woman and Aquaman, just that badass version of Batman that made that comic great.

Gunn Shills love to act like Gunn had nothing to do with The Flash when it was GUNN that rewrote Henry Cavill out for Sasha & changed the Batmen etc up and the ending...everything he touches in DC just sucks!
